Valley Stream doctor documents family's ... - Jewish Book Review

Collecting information on his family?s history for more than seven decades, Dr. Herbert Ausubel has finally put his memories into words. The longtime Valley Stream doctor, who has been practicing on West Merrick Road for 51 years, is penning a six-part series and his first book was released last week.

The 80-year-old doctor?s book,?Flower of God: A Jewish Family?s 3,000-Year Journey from Spice to Medicine, documents the history of the Ausubel family dating back to days of King Solomon. It traces the family?s migration from ancient Israel, to Babylon, Persia, Anatolia, Europe and finally the United States.

Ausubel was raised in a three-generation household, and heard many stories from his grandfather about their family history while growing up. As a child, he was reading college level books at 4 years old, so retaining information about his family was easy, although, ?I didn?t plan to write a book when I was 4 years old,? he said.

His father moved to the United States in 1921 out of fears of anti-Semitism. Two years later, he published an article urging the Jews to leave Europe and re-establish their homeland in Palestine. Ausubel said he lost several relatives in the Holocaust.

It wasn?t until he was an adult that Ausubel became serious about writing a book. But before he picked up a pen, he wanted to visit the many places where his family made its mark over the past 3,000 years. He wanted to get a sense of these places, even if he couldn?t witness the actual events he would be writing about.

After getting married, instead of taking a honeymoon he and his wife saved money for about two years, then took a ?grand tour? overseas. They visited London, taking buses and ferries around Europe. They stayed at bed and breakfasts, saying it gave him a chance to meet the real people.

Over the years he visited Mongolia, Australia, Siberia and Africa. In Sardis, Turkey, he found a cornerstone on a building ? 2,300 years old ? with his family?s name on it.

It took Ausubel about 32 years total to write the book. With his first published book out, he will now turn his attention to finishing the other five parts. He said those stories are written, but haven?t been polished yet. He hopes to release all six books over the course of six years.

And Ausubel said he hopes he will be around to see those books published. He said he has lived his whole life following good health and dietary habits, which he said can increase a person?s life expectancy up to 25 years. ?Not just survival,? Ausubel said, ?but quality survival.?

Ausubel?s next book to be released will actually be the fifth part of the series. He said that each of the six books traces six of his children?s blood lines ? three from his side and three from his wife?s side.

The most unique material, he said, will be in the fourth series, which details his wife?s ancestry from King David.

Ausubel is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He followed the family tradition of practicing medicine, noting that his ancestors thousands of years ago were the first to use the hyssop plant as an herbal remedy because of its antiseptic properties. Ausubel practices internal medicine and oncology, and has had some patients for more than 40 years. His son, one of Ausubel?s two children, also became a doctor and they share the Valley Stream office.

Medicine is his first passion and writing is his second passion. Ausubel said he would work on his book late at night, often until 1 or 2 a.m., because his job as a doctor came first. ?I have a very busy career,? he said. ?I take my work in medicine very seriously.?

Ausubel said he hopes that his books can enlighten readers on 3,000 years of history. He said he wanted to highlight the wrongs that have been done in the past, so those parts of history aren?t repeated. He also hopes that his books will be read by non-Jews to learn about the Jewish experience.

?I would like to leave a legacy for the world to remember,? he said.

CBDT gets nod to set up criminal investigation directorate ...

The Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, has given his approval to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to set up a criminal investigation directorate. This would pave the way for the Income Tax Department to investigate cases involving tax evasion arising out of criminal activities. With this decision, high profile cases like Hasan Ali or those involving black money stashed away in the Liechtenstein Bank can now be effectively investigated, official sources said. The Income Tax Department had come in for some criticism in the Hasan Ali case. In the recent years, there has also been criticism that the Department could do little in bringing back the black money stashed by Indians in banks abroad.

Meanwhile, Mr Mukherjee will inaugurate the 27th Annual Conference of Chief Commissioners and Directors General of Income Tax in the Capital on Tuesday. The two-day conference will, among other things, discuss the various developments and the steps taken to tackle black money. The administrative challenges that would be faced by the Income Tax Department during the transition to Direct Taxes Code (DTC) and measures to tackle those challenges are likely to be discussed, sources said. The other issues that would be deliberated upon include use of information from central information bureau, processing of returns in centralised processing centre (CPC) environment, role of Income Tax department in assisting the Election Commission in ensuring fair elections besides strengthening of tax deduction at source (TDS) systems. - www.thehindubusinessline.com

Making It Official: Hunting Al-Qaida Worldwide

This week, the House begins debate on a defense spending bill that would authorize the president to attack al-Qaida and its associates all over the world.

Supporters say the measure would give the U.S. more leeway to fight terrorists after the death of Osama bin Laden. But critics worry that it hands the White House too much power.

The last time Congress waded into this debate was September 2001, a week after the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans. Lawmakers passed an Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) against the people who planned those attacks and the countries that harbored them; it didn't mention al-Qaida.

Well, a lot has changed in 10 years: Bin Laden is dead, and al-Qaida has taken root in Yemen and Somalia. Bobby Chesney, who teaches national security law at the University of Texas, says now might be a good time to update the law to cover new groups that are striking American troops.

? Says the United States is engaged in armed conflict with al-Qaida, the Taliban and associated forces, and the president can use military force against them or detain them until the end of hostilities.

? Does not limit the military force geographically or to groups that were involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, as the original AUMF did.

"Groups like that, that are not in any way encompassed by the original AUMF by its own terms, but that very clearly are engaging in combat operations against our soldiers in Afghanistan ? of course we should have a clear legal foundation for fighting back against them," Chesney says.

The defense authorization bill up for consideration by the House this week would do just that. The bill says the U.S. is at war with al-Qaida, the Taliban and associated forces. It gives the White House the power to take action against anyone who belongs to those groups or anyone who supports them, anywhere in the world.

For human rights lawyer David Remes, that's going too far.

"The fact of the matter is that it's a radical expansion of existing authority that would commit the United States to open-ended policing of the world. It would in effect make the United States the master of the world," says Remes, who works with the Washington-based Appeal for Justice.

Congress is giving up too much, Remes says. "It's a blank check to the president to wage war."

But Charles "Cully" Stimson, who worked on defense policy in the Bush administration, couldn't disagree more.

"It's not a blank check," Stimson says. "In fact, it fills in the blanks."

Stimson, now a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said the new defense bill finally makes explicit that the administration can hold detainees until the end of any hostilities.

"It puts to rest this nagging argument that we've seen over and over and over again, that the AUMF does not specifically authorize detention," he says.

Those arguments are still nagging at human rights groups.

Laura Murphy, who runs the Washington legislative office at the American Civil Liberties Union, says if the House bill moves forward, the conflict might never end.

"It could be like the war on drugs," she says. "No one has declared an end to the war on drugs."

Because the measure doesn't say the conflict is confined to, say, Iraq or Afghanistan, Murphy fears that it could lead to some alarming situations.

"Unlike the Authorization for Use of Military Force that was passed in 2001, it has no geographic boundaries, so the president could take America to war in any country in the world, including inside the United States itself," she adds.

Critics have another concern. The defense authorization bill moved through the House Armed Services Committee earlier this month in a marathon session. The provision that authorizes military force got only a few minutes of debate, after midnight.

Human rights groups hope the measure gets a more careful look this week. They have one final option: the Senate.

"The Senate has an obligation to be much more deliberative than the House has been, and to really give this particular provision full and fair hearings and debate," Murphy says.

Michael B. Mukasey, an attorney general in the Bush administration, told the bill's House sponsors Friday that the measure is "both timely and constructive."

Mukasey wrote to House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard "Buck" McKeon that the legislation "would add order and rationality to what has been an improvisational exercise overseen by judges who do not have the fact-finding resources of Congress or the accountability that comes from being responsible for protecting national security."

For its part, the White House has remained silent about its views on the legislation. In court cases filed by Guantanamo Bay detainees, President Obama has implied that he is taking a lot of the authority to hold terrorism suspects that the House is debating whether to give him outright.
