Colgate profit up but costs still pressure margins (AP)

NEW YORK ? Colgate-Palmolive Co. said Thursday that higher revenue in Latin America fueled its second-quarter earnings, underscoring how American companies are increasingly relying on foreign markets as recession-weary U.S. customers get tapped out.

The New York company, best known for its toothpaste and dish soap, also noted that it had raised prices by 6.5 percent in Latin America, where customers are more willing to absorb the extra expense. It lowered prices in North America by 4.5 percent by offering discounts, which also helped it head off competitors who are scrapping "for pieces of a smaller pie," said CEO Ian Cook.

However, Cook also said he expects U.S. prices to increase in the second half of this year. The company hopes that focusing on higher-end products, such as toothpaste for sensitive teeth, and more advertising will entice U.S. customers to keep buying.

"If your product is seen as superior, there is the opportunity to raise prices," Cook said.

Like many companies, Colgate is paying more than it was a year ago for the materials it needs to make and transport its products. Companies want to pass those costs along to customers by raising prices at the store, but have to be careful not to raise prices too much and drive customers away. Though Colgate's revenue rose 10 percent, the amount it had to spend to make and transport those goods rose 13 percent.

Cook said that retailers and customers have so far accepted the higher prices. He added that current price increases this year are substantially less than price increases the company took after a spike in gas prices in fall 2008. He also notes that competitors have raised their prices too.

Cook said prices have "not been debilitating from a consumer point of view so far," and he's confident that "we can take pricing in a world where (other) people are doing the same."

Colgate has tried to mitigate the price increases for customers by trimming its own expenses, which Cook said can include "everything from telephones to computers to cars to lab supplies." However, Colgate's general and administrative expenses rose 10 percent as the company spent more on advertising, much of it aimed at making customers aware of new products.

The company said that higher commodities costs also drove down its gross profit margins. For the second quarter, the gross profit margin was 57.4 percent, down from 58.8 percent a year ago. Basically, that means that for every dollar the company generated in sales, it had 57.4 cents left over to cover basic operating costs and profit.

Colgate said its revenue for the three months ended June 30 increased 10 percent to $4.19 billion, edging analysts' estimates of $4.16 billion. Net income rose 3 percent to $622 million, or $1.26 per share.

Revenue growth was strongest in Latin America, where it climbed 17 percent. Revenue increased 12 percent in Asia and Africa, and 11.5 percent in Europe and the South Pacific, but fell 3 percent in North America.

Colgate gets about 80 percent of the revenue in its largest division ? oral, personal and home care ? from outside North America, up from about 75 percent five years ago. To be sure, some of the revenue gains are from favorable foreign exchange rates. As the dollar weakens, the revenue that a company earns overseas translates into more U.S. dollars.

Colgate's stock was up 59 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $86.08 in the early afternoon.

Sonja blamed someone else for the Marriage Equality debacle. Of course Bravo didn't air the person's name but some anonymous person wouldn't let Simon speak, not Sonja. And Alex was looking to make nice and brush it all under the rug. 

Plus 5 to Kelly for calling them on their bullshit and revisionist history. Speaking of Kelly, Cosmopolitan just rated her one of their nicest celebrities and she seemed to believe her own press. Minus 3 because that's always dangerous.

Viewer question: Why did Kelly call Alex weird? Well, all of these women are weird and Alex does always turn red when she speaks. Yeah. It's a little weird. Plus 2.

We had a look back at Kelly dissing Sonja's house, cleanliness, and finances. Are those the type of comments that get you on Cosmo's nice list? Minus 5.

We'll move onto Sonja who has had a tough year. She not only lost her lawsuit, she lost her panties, time and time again. The joke, as well as the view got old fast. Minus 8.

Then Jill accuses Ramona of ambushing her friendship with Bethenny and claims that Bethenny scared her. Oh please. Minus 7. Bethenny has moved on. Everyone else needs to as well.

Ramona insults Jill's husband Bobby and calls Jill a loser. Minus 6.

In return Jill calls Ramona a low life. The name calling could have gone on all night without Andy's intervention.

The funniest part was that Alex kept trying to interject herself into their fight. Jill called her and f-ing bitch and an idiot. Plus 10 for not holding back.

Viewers called Kelly the voice of reason this season and I will admit, it seemed like someone adjusted her medication. When Alex tried to interject, Kelly just kept talking. No, Alex she wasn't railroading you. She was ignoring you. Minus 5 for not taking the hint.

Cindy's turn. In my opinion, Cindy was the least interesting Housewife this season ... and the most surly. That didn't change at the reunion. 

Minus 15 for making us sit through yet another discussion about Cindy's conference call at Sonja's brunch. Cindy can defend herself all she wants to. It was simply rude.

It didn't seem like anyone liked Cindy. Sonja dissed her party. Ramona beat up on her brother and Alex told her she needed to get laid. But to be perfectly honest if Cindy disappeared for next season it would be no great loss. Plus 10 if Bravo takes the hint.

Finally we get down to Luann and Ramona and that's when things got nasty. Boy, did Ramona's claws come out.

Ramona obviously felt threatened by the Countess, although I'm not sure why. But the dirt started to fly.

Ramona called out Luann's open marriage and claimed her daughter Victoria had transferred to four different schools in just a few years. An obvious hit to Luann's parenting abilities.

Minus 10 because I expected better from Ramona. Dragging the kids into this was just plain wrong. You can throw one another and your husbands under the bus all you'd like but leave the kid's issues out of it.

Jill's so pissed she needed a break and apparently so did we because this reunion show will continue next week.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? "Curb Your Enthusiasm" scored a ratings surge even Larry David would have trouble complaining about.

The series, which enjoyed a seven-year high for its July 12 season premiere and climbed an additional 17 percent the following week, jumped another 24 percent for Sunday's episode, HBO said Tuesday.

Sunday's episode grabbed an accumulated 2.9 million viewers between its two airings, with the 10 p.m. broadcast scooping up 2.4 million viewers, and a midnight re-airing taking in an additional 554,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, the cable outlet's flesh-friendly vampire drama "True Blood" experienced a high for its fourth season, which premiered June 26, with 6.6 million total viewers tuning in between the episode's 9 p.m. airing (which grabbed 5.3 million total viewers) and its 11 p.m. re-broadcast (which scooped up an additional 1.3 million viewers).

Last Sunday's episode garnered a total of 6.2 million total viewers.
