Jiaflix Named Exclusive Partner of China Movie Channel Web Subsidiary M1905; Venture Will Stream Films Throughout China

Jiaflix Enterprises principals Sid Ganis, Marc Ganis and Kenneth Huang, and M1905, the official internet subsidiary of China Movie Channel/CCTV6 jointly announced today an exclusive venture to stream both Chinese and international feature films on a subscription basis (SVOD), as well as international feature films on a transactional video on demand basis (TVOD) throughout China. The long term agreement names Jiaflix, a U.S./China enterprise, M1905's exclusive authorized party for the importation of international films and libraries from North America and Europe for new media, internet streaming and mobile devices.

"China has the largest number of online users in the world, and M1905.com, commonly known as China Movie Web, is SARFT's official internet movie site. The M1905.com web site is dedicated solely to movies and caters to fans of both domestic Chinese and international films. It averages more than 16 million page views and 4 million unique visitors daily, has more than 3 million registered users and has been growing rapidly, more than doubling year to year," said Jiaflix principal Marc Ganis. "This new venture will bring the best that Hollywood has to offer to viewers in China. It represents a great opportunity to enhance cultural cooperation between our two nations and we are thrilled to be part of this official bridge between the Chinese and Hollywood film industries."

Jiaflix also announced today that it has signed a multi-year licensing deal with Paramount Pictures to include titles from Paramount's extensive and renowned film library for both SVOD and TVOD.

"This is an important step for Paramount in terms of positioning our product in China," said Hal Richardson, President, Paramount Home Media Distribution. "Paramount has worked with China Movie Channel for many years and we are happy to be expanding our relationship and online movie viewership in China through our deal with Jiaflix."

M1905's Director and Vice President, Longfei Liang, adds, "We are delighted to make this announcement with our partners at Jiaflix. China has a long and storied history in films. New media distribution of films is the future and M1905 is excited to be working with Jiaflix and Paramount Pictures, an iconic Hollywood studio, in bringing great movies to our expanding online audience."

The agreement with Paramount is the first under the Jiaflix partnership with M1905 that will see licensing deals with several other North American and European content providers.

M1905 is the wholly-owned subsidiary of the China Movie Channel, which is under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) of the People's Republic of China. China Movie Channel is that country's largest television buyer of international movies and has agreements with virtually all of the major movie studios. M1905 sub-licenses domestic Chinese films to a number of video web sites in China. In June 2012, M1905's mobile television service officially started operations with China Mobile and China Telecom's mobile video service allowing M1905 to provide officially licensed content and VOD service to the more than 100 million 3G mobile subscribers in China.

Sid Ganis' long affiliation within the film industry along with his recent role in China as Honorary Chairperson of Wuxi Studio Development and Promotion Committee, assisted in bringing this venture to fruition. He is a former President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and previously held roles as Vice Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and President of Paramount Pictures. Ganis is currently an independent producer at his company Out of the Blue Entertainment and Co-Executive Producer on last year's ABC Television series PAN AM.

Kenneth Huang is a China based entrepreneur and investor. He is active in a number of important business sectors in China including capital markets, infrastructure construction, sports and entertainment. Mr. Huang is a successful philanthropist and was voted the most popular philanthropist by Sina.com and BQ Magazine in December 2009. Mr. Huang was raised in China and educated in the United States.

Matthew Lynch, Ed.D.: New Gang Law Blows into the Windy City, Causing a Backlash in Illinois

A new Illinois anti-gang law has caused quite a stir in recent weeks, raising eyebrows among black policymakers and activists who suggest the law may have racial overtones. The legislation, signed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn in early June, permits state prosecutors to apply investigation tactics similar to that of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

Many believe this new law unfairly targets people of color and will ultimately lead to a significant increase in the number of blacks who are incarcerated in Illinois. Some consider this yet another link in a long chain of legal decisions rendered to covertly obstruct the advancement of African Americans.

RICO, which was initially passed in the 1970's to punish crimes committed by the mafia, now extends to street and prison gangs. More than 30 states are using RICO criteria to incarcerate gang members. In addition to being charged with individual felonies, like extortion and narcotics distribution, RICO statutes give investigators the right to indict gang members on racketeering charges -which carry a hefty sentence of 20 years per count.

Essentially, RICO permits racketeering charges to be brought upon anyone who participates in organized crime. This includes leaders who order the execution of crimes, but do not physically carry them out. Now, every offender involved in a gang's illegal activity can be tried in one criminal procedure. This effectively puts an entire gang on trial, not just a few isolated individuals, as was previously the case. It also holds the top echelons of a gang's hierarchy accountable, where these individuals were once untouchable from a legal standpoint.

"For the first time in the history of our state, this new law will give local prosecutors the tools to identify and address patterns in multiple gang-related offenses and join different offenses and offenders into a single court proceeding," said Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez in a recent statement. "This new law will require fundamental changes in the way state prosecutors approach gang crimes because racketeering has not existed under Illinois law in any meaningful shape or form," Alvarez reported.

While this may seem like a reasonable solution, the truth is this new law will only compound the obvious racial bias that pervades the U. S. the judicial system. According to the Chicago Crime Commission, there are as many as 100 rival gangs in the Chicago metropolitan area with a membership as large as 70,000.

It's no secret the United States of America has the highest incarceration rate in the world with more than 1.6 million men and women currently behind bars. What many don't know is there are more African American men currently incarcerated than the number who were enslaved in the U.S. in 1850. In 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that 3,074 black men per 100,000 were incarcerated, as opposed to 459 white men per 100,000. This means there are seven times more black men doing time in America than their white counterparts.

These shocking figures have become the basis for the argument against RICO laws. While blacks only account for 13 percent of the population, more than half of all prisons in America are populated by non-Hispanic people of color. Many of these inmates are affiliated with a gang.

Frank E. Watkins, press secretary for U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois, is just one of many predominant black leaders who have been outspoken about the new anti-gang measure. He has told news sources that he disagrees with the fundamental philosophy behind the law and he is not alone. There is no simple solution to this problem, though it is one that continues to plague the nation.

Numerous black legislators, policy-makers and elected officials have dedicated extensive resources to ending gang affiliations and their subsequent violence. Black community leaders and prominent church figures have clocked countless hours in town hall meetings strategizing about how to encourage young people to stay away from gangs. Authors, activists and advocates have done their part to educate the public about this crucial avenue of the American landscape.

The irony is -gang activity is far more prevalent inside the walls of a penitentiary than it will ever be in the free world. If gang members are charged and convicted of racketeering only to go to a detention center where they will join fellow gang members and continue to commit egregious offenses.....in essence, hasn't the system itself produced its own version of organized crime?

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ? Bo Van Pelt kept bogeys off his card and picked up an extra shot when his wedge spun back into the hole for an eagle. It's a formula that would work well at a U.S. Open, which is what Congressional felt like Thursday in the AT&T National.

On a day when the temperature was in the 90s and only seven players managed a score in the 60s, Van Pelt opened with a 4-under 67 to grab a one-shot lead over Vijay Singh, Brendon De Jonge and Jimmy Walker, who bogeyed his final hole.

Tiger Woods was never under par in the afternoon and opened with a 1-over 72.

So this is what the U.S. Open was supposed to look like.

The venerable Blue Course took a beating last year in the so-called toughest test in golf when unfavorable weather conditions in the weeks leading up to the U.S. Open and overnight rain during the championship made Congressional a pushover. Rory McIlroy had a record score of 16-under 268 for an eight-shot victory.

The AT&T National was more of a grind.

"It's certainly, I think, a little retribution for what happened last year," Woods said. "Don't be mad at me. I didn't play."

Woods missed the U.S. Open last year while recovering from injuries to his left leg. He won at Congressional in 2009 the last time the AT&T National was played here, and he won at 13-under 267. That was nothing like the course he faced Thursday.

Billy Hurley III, who went to the Naval Academy and spent five years in the service, joined Pat Perez and Jason Day at 2-under 69.

The seven players in the 60s were two less than the opening round at the U.S. Open last year. Four players failed to break 80, just like a year ago, only the 120-man field at the AT&T National is filled with PGA Tour players. For the U.S. Open, two of those rounds in the 80s were by amateurs, a third by Ty Tryon.

"I think everybody knows the golf course last year just wasn't quite ready to be set up the way they wanted it to be set up, and it's unfortunate," Van Pelt said. "I know they spent a lot of time and money to get it ready, and some things are out of your control. I said it last year ? they needed one more year, and basically you could have a U.S. Open here this week if you wanted it.

"That's the way it's set up."

The sunshine and heat figure to make it tougher over the next few days, especially on the weekend.

Nick Watney, the defending champion (at Aronimink) who was in the large group at 70, said the more fair comparison was with the U.S. Open held two weeks ago at The Olympic Club. Michael Thompson led after the opening day at 4-under 66, and Webb Simpson won at 1-over 281.

Van Pelt only twice struggled to make par, making a 30-foot putt on the 15th and a 20-footer on the par-5 sixth hole. Equally impressive was his bunker shot on the 18th to tap-in range, and he took those vibes to the first hole. After an aggressive drive, he had 93 yards to the hole and figured it was a good time to put to test all the work he has done on his wedge play. It worked out better than he imagined, holing it for an eagle.

"I actually thought it had kind of spun back in front of the hole, and all of a sudden this guy behind the green started going nuts," Van Pelt said. "You never know when those are going to happen, so it's nice to get a deuce."

Even better was not making a bogey and giving himself a good start going into his Friday morning start of the second round.

Woods never got it going, and he made two blunders late in the round with his bunker play, which also was suspect in the U.S. Open two weeks ago. After making a 15-foot birdie putt on the 14th, he put his approach into the bunker right of the green on the 15th. His shot barely got out of the sand, and he stubbed a chip, leaving him a 7-footer that he had to make for bogey.

On the next hole, he was 244 yards from the hole when he pulled a 4-iron to the bunker short of the green on the par-5 16th. The gallery groaned when the ball emerged from the bunker and barely got onto the green, costing him a reasonable birdie chance. He two-putted from 30 feet for par.

Woods attributed it to the amount of sand in the bunkers and that his 60-degree wedge "is not built for this much sand."

"So I have to make an adjustment and hit the ball a little bit closer, make sure I hit a little closer to the golf ball," he said. "And I just didn't do it."

Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan and Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III were at 70, along with Robert Garrigus, who tied for third last year at the U.S. Open by breaking par in all four rounds. He feigned a yawn coming out of the clubhouse Thursday. "Just another round under par here," he said.

His 70 in the opening round of the AT&T National felt more like a 67.

"I was flying irons around the hole and they were gone," he said, referring to the firmness of the greens.

It was a big day for Hurley, for so many reasons ? a Navy man at a tournament that celebrates the military, on a Congressional golf course not far from where he learned to play golf and then attended the Naval Academy.

"I think they started Plebe summer today," Hurley said, grinning.

Hurley played bogey-free until a litany of bad breaks on his last hole. His tee shot hit a tree and went even farther left, making it tough to even get back to the fairway. His third shot that he laid up short of the green settled into a divot. And his par putt from 20 feet hit a spike mark.

Even so, he was happy with the start.

"This is a heck of a golf course," Hurley said. "You have to hit a lot of quality shots, and I was able to do that. Even at this place, you hit quality shots that end up with not a good look at birdie sometimes."

The United States Provides Great Transparency In Commercial RE Deals

The 2012 Global Real Estate Transparency index released by real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle this week places the United States on the top of the list when it comes to transparency in real estate. The study looked at nearly 100 real estate markets worldwide and at nearly as many different factors:

Among key findings from the report:

• The United States ranks as the world?s most transparent real estate market in 2012, followed by the United Kingdom and Australia. Also ranking as ?Highly Transparent? : Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, France, Finland, Switzerland and Sweden.

• The MIST growth markets (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea and Turkey) are significantly improving in transparency, with Turkey leading the way.

• Looking at regions, Latin America shows the strongest progress in transparency.

• Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency ?has emerged as an important transparency factor with the United Kingdom, Australia and France the most transparent markets in terms of real estate sustainability. The UK has a long history of building energy efficiency system and introduced the world?s first Green Building rating system.? Australia has been the test bed for new environmental laws, regulations and incentives.

What Is Transparency?

Transparency in commercial real estate is a complex set of public and private factors that interrelate to produce a positive environment for investment and economic growth. ?One defining aspect of transparency is the publishing of data ? by government, by lenders, by practitioners, by owners ? so that key performance indicators are easily available in order to allow comparisons and benchmarking. ?Transparency is both a count of the number of these indicators as well as their reliability. ? Law and regulation in the US tends to produce more real estate market transparency in the net.

How Does Sustainability Relate To Transparency?

One example of a private indicator that adds to transparency is the set of various metrics illuminating the performance of a commercial property, right down to its energy efficiency. ?How much?energy?per square foot a property uses in a month can make or break a decision to invest in that property today; energy markets are volatile and capital is making a very long trip these days. ?Today, the energy profile of a property is no less important than its debt load, permitting/zoning, improvements history or other obviously critical indicators when evaluating potential investment.

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung (updated)

Thought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside? Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month -- and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again. Still, it's certainly bad news for the Korean company, but given its expansive stable of other slates still on sale combined with its recent economic performance, we're sure Samsung can weather the storm while the courtroom fireworks continue.

Update: All Things D got a copy of Koh's order, and we just gave it a quick read. Turns out that she granted the injunction due to the strength of the merits of Apple's case and the unlikelihood that Samsung would invalidate Apple's design patent -- the court already held that the 10.1 is "virtually indistinguishable" from the iPad's design and likely infringes Apple's IP. Furthermore, Judge Koh held that, because Apple and Samsung are direct competitors in the tablet space and "design mattered more to customers in making tablet purchases," Apple would be irreparably harmed by further 10.1 sales. Those two factors outweighed any hardship suffered by Samsung, and thus, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was stricken from US shelves.

Marriage Communication: Understanding the Importance | Pursuit of ...

Here is an article I wrote for His N Her Love Story Blog a few weeks back. Thought I would share with you for today?s Marriage Monday.

When you meet a couple that has been married for a long time and you ask them what their secret to a successful marriage is: more than likely they will tell you that communication was at the top of the list. Communication is seen as the doorway to understanding therefore should be used wisely in our marriage relationships. Communication is the key to a strong and healthy marriage.

For example, as a wife, we often complain about our husbands not understanding what we are feeling at the time yet more often than not we do not effectively communicate with our spouses. First we have to learn that women and men are created differently, therefore the waves of communication is different.

Communication is the only way you will know what is going on and how your spouse feels when it comes to things in your marriage. You need to talk to your spouse about how you feel about things they do or don?t do. A marriage is built on communication and you won?t have that successful marriage if you are not communicating with each other effectively.

You may think, ?Well, we have love for each other,? in which that is good but what is love when you have no way of nurturing the love you have for each other through communication? Here are a few tips that will help you understand the purpose and importance of communication in your marriage:

• Identification ? Letting your spouse know you accept them as is.
• Significance ? Letting your spouse know that they are the most important person in your life.
• Considerations ? Letting your spouse know that you are thoughtful, attentive, considerate and careful of their needs.

Although communication is very important in our marriage relationships, effective listening skills are even greater!

Physical fitness may improve survival among diabetes patients with ...

Being physically fit may improve survival rates among diabetes patients with a particular type of heart abnormality, a new study determines. The results will be presented at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

In the United States, nearly 26 million people have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of diabetes, and more people are developing the disease as the obesity epidemic continues. Treatment includes making lifestyle changes and taking medication to control blood sugar.

Left ventricle hypertrophy, or LVH, is an abnormality characterized by a thickening of the muscular walls of the heart's main pumping chamber, which can reduce its ability to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Causes of LVH include high blood pressure, and other heart and medical conditions. Medications are available to treat the disease.

While both diabetes and LVH can increase the risk of death, the effects of these diseases in relation to physical-fitness levels were unclear.

In this study, diabetic patients who were not physically fit and had LVH were the most likely to die, while physically fit patients, both with and without LVH, had a significantly lower risk of death. The differences remained even after investigators adjusted for potential influences, including high blood pressure, excess body weight, smoking, and medications. In each group, the risk of death compared to patients with low physical-fitness levels and no LVH was:

• 20 percent greater ? low physical fitness with LVH
• 41 percent lower ? physically fit without LVH
• 43 percent lower ? physically fit with LVH

"Exercise fitness markedly improves survival in patients with type 2 diabetes and left ventricle hypertrophy," said lead author Khaled A. Alswat, M.B.B.S., endocrinology fellow at Washington, D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center, George Washington University. "We also found that improvement in fitness improves survival significantly, regardless of the presence or absence of left ventricle wall thickness."

Beginning in 1986 and continuing until 2011, 866 male veterans with type 2 diabetes and an average age of 61 years enrolled in the study at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C

At the study's start, participants underwent a standard exercise assessment with a treadmill to determine fitness level and were then classified as either low fit or physically fit. In addition, all patients received a special test, known as an echocardiogram, which can diagnose LVH with sound waves that generate an image of the heart muscle, including its contractions and relaxation. The follow-up was as long as 24 years, with a median of almost 9 years. During the course of the study, 346 deaths occurred, which is an annual rate of 4.3 percent, overall.

Amazon Studios adds first four original shows to its 'development slate'

Back in May, Amazon put a call out for budding screenwriters to submit their ideas for an original comedy or children's series. Now, four of the submissions have been marked up on the Amazon Series Development Slate, with more being added to a "consider" list. The chosen projects comprise three comedies, and one preschooler's show. By getting the Amazonian thumbs-up, the ideas receive $10,000 to extend the initial option, assistance to develop the script, and potentially a pilot episode. Asus Transformer Pad Infinity shows up at Best Buy, commands $600 price tag, 64GB of memory

You didn't think ASUS pushed its souped up Transformer slate though federal approval for its health, did you? No, if Best Buy's online store has anything to say about it, the Transformer Pad Infinity's FCC excursion was preparing it for sale. It's not quite ready yet, but when it is, Best Buy will apparently be handing the slab out for $599 and change, netting buyers 64GB of memory, NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor and a 1,920 x 1,200 10.1-inch Super IPS+ display. The listing appears to be for the WiFi-only version of the tablet, with no mention of the Snapdragon S4-equipped LTE variant that ASUS announced earlier this year. According to the product page, the unreleased hardware is currently "sold out online," but at least you know how many pennies you'll need to pinch. Check it out at the source link below.
