HTC Q2 2013 Earnings Analysis

Why does HTC CEO Peter Chou still have a job? That?s the only question that comes to mind when looking over HTC?s latest earnings report, which shows the company is hurtling toward a meltdown not seen in the mobile world since BlackBerry circa 2011. Despite making one of the year?s best smartphones in the HTC One, the company on Tuesday reported that its operating margin had fallen to just 1.5% in Q2 while warning that its operating margin could further erode to -8% in Q3.

[More from BGR: Microsoft?s Surface is officially a flop]

What made these results so devastating for HTC was that much of the blame for its erosion in margins can be placed on the HTC One, the smartphone that the company was counting on to be its savior in 2013. As ZDNet notes, the costs of producing the HTC One are so high that HTC really needed the device to be an enormous hit to make them worthwhile. But although the One has been a bigger success than HTC?s ill-fated 2012 flagship smartphone lineup, HTC isn?t releasing sales figures for the device, which suggests that it has come in well below the company?s expectations.

[More from BGR: Dell?s potential savior, a $100 Android computer the size of a USB stick, now shipping to testers]

Even if the One had met HTC?s expectations, it?s no sure bet that the company would be in much better shape. In retrospect, HTC?s decision to put all its eggs in the One basket looks like a disastrous miscalculation because the company chose to bet big on the high-end smartphone market just as all the growth in the industry had moved toward low-cost handsets sold in emerging markets.

IDG News?reports that HTC has somewhat recognized this problem and is vowing a ?new range of mid-tier products? to address it. This move is far too little, too late, however, because HTC?s competitors are well ahead of it when it comes to releasing low-cost smartphones. What?s more, ?mid-tier? products aren?t going to give HTC any kind of edge in key emerging markets.?Without a budget handset on par with Nokia?s Lumia 521 or Samsung?s assorted cheap Android phones, HTC looks like it has nowhere to go but down unless the One miraculously reaches Galaxy S4 sales levels over the next several months.

All of which brings us back to our original question: Why does Peter Chou still have a job? We?ve heard rumblings all year that the HTC One would be Chou?s last chance to prove himself before getting ousted by anxious shareholders. The results are now in: HTC?s strategy with the One has failed spectacularly. There is no longer any reason for Chou to stick around.

Former coach: Paterno said Penn State mishandled Sandusky case

HARRISBURG, Pa. ? Longtime Penn State head coach Joe Paterno said that the university mishandled its response to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, a former assistant coach testified Monday.

Mike McQueary was called as a witness in a hearing for three former Penn State officials accused in a cover-up of the scandal. He told the judge that the late Hall of Fame coach had told him over the years that ?Old Main screwed up? ? referring to university administrators ? in response to the allegations against Sandusky.

Former Penn State president Graham Spanier, retired university vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley are accused of failing to tell police about a sexual abuse allegation involving Sandusky and then trying to cover it up. They have proclaimed their innocence.

McQueary testified about a specific exchange in the week before Paterno?s firing in November 2011.

He recalled the head coach as saying that the school would come down hard on McQueary and try to make him a scapegoat. Paterno advised McQueary not to trust the administration or then-university counsel Cynthia Baldwin, the former assistant coach testified.

A Penn State spokesman said Monday the university would not comment on the legal proceedings. The Associated Press left a message for a Paterno family spokesman.

The hearing, which could last several days, began Monday after being delayed for months because of a legal dispute about the role played in the case by Baldwin, who had accompanied the administrators to their grand jury appearances.

The judge must determine whether there?s enough evidence against the ex-officials to send the case to trial. The three are charged with perjury, obstruction, endangering the welfare of children, failure to properly report suspected abuse and conspiracy. Those charges include allegations of hiding evidence from investigators and lying to a grand jury.

McQueary has testified that he saw Sandusky and a boy engaged in a sex act in the locker room shower 2001 and within days reported it to Paterno, Curley and Schultz.

Curley and Schultz have said McQueary never reported that the encounter was sexual in nature, while Spanier has said Curley and Schultz never told him about any sort of sex abuse of a boy. They said they had believed that Sandusky and the boy were engaged in nothing more than horseplay.

Sandusky is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence after being convicted last year of sexually abusing 10 boys. He maintains his innocence.

Curley and Schultz were charged in November 2011, when Sandusky was arrested, and accused of perjury and failure to report.

Spanier was forced out as president at that time, and he was charged a year later when more counts were added against Curley and Schultz. He remains a faculty member on administrative leave.

Paterno died in January 2012. His family has vehemently denied accusations that he covered up allegations against Sandusky, the once highly-regarded defensive coordinator.

Sony and Panasonic team up for next-generation optical storage

The storage capacity of Blu-ray is not enough for the future as Sony and Panasonic (both members of Blu-ray Disc Foundation) have teamed up to develop the next generation optical storage for professional use.

1-1208707554nqU5

Like cassettes, the VHS and floppy discs, optical discs are thought to be obsolete in the digital age that we are living. The bloom of ?flash storage and cloud computing render optical discs almost useless as a storage medium for consumer. Furthermore, Apple and several other major PC manufacturers such as HP, Dell and Lenovo started to exclude optical drive in the design of their notebooks. These phenomenons further threaten the relevancy of optical storage in the consumer market.

optical

Although showing signs of death, the advantage of optical storage still keeps them relevant in several professional industries. According to Sony, optical storage especially excel in long term storage due to the resistance to environment properties such as temperature and humidity.

The duo have previously leveraged the strength of optical storage in developing long-term storage solutions to video production industries and cloud data centers. However, due to the capacity limits of Blu-ray, they are in need of something that can store more per disk in the future.

Thus, the pair agree to jointly develop a new standard for professional-use next-generation optical discs with a?capacity of at least 300 GB per disc by the end of 2015. Technical details are not disclosed.

Although useful for professionals, the relevance of optical storage in the consumer space is questionable. Who needs to archive data when we have cloud back-up and on demand streaming services?

10 College Basketball Stars Who Won't Transition Well to the NBA Game

Russ Smith, like Marshall Henderson, can score a lot. And he does so, a lot.

Lightning quick and fearless about contact, Smith would seem a prime candidate to transcend his physical limitations and succeed at the pro level. And he can, if he can become as creative a distributor as he is a scorer.

There are few NBA players today listed at 6'0" and 165 pounds, and those who are don't play any position aside from point guard. Smith has never had to create for others with steady point guard Peyton Siva next to him. With Siva gone, Smith may get more chances to play on the ball as a means to take pressure off new points Chris Jones and Terry Rozier.

A decent 21 percent assist rate shows that Smith can find his teammates when he's motivated, but the fact that he finished fifth in America in field-goal attempts demonstrates how rarely that motivation strikes him.

Smith's shot selection is often questionable. Hoop-Math points out that he took more two-point jumpers than either rim attempts or threes, despite sinking only 30 percent of those mid-range efforts. NBA coaches will staple him to the bench for such performances.

Again, Smith and Henderson have similar dilemmas. Smith, though, seems more likely to follow the route of Rockets reserve Patrick Beverley, who learned the point guard position in Europe before coming to the NBA. While Henderson is much more likely to give the NBA the finger and keep being a conscience-free scorer, Smith should be a lot more receptive to coaching.

We may see Russ Smith in the NBA, but it may not be immediate.

College football coaches torn on new targeting enforcement

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) BYU's Jamaal Williams is brought down by Oregon State's Ryan Murphy (25) and Feti Taumoepeau (41) as BYU hosts Oregon State college football Saturday October 13, 2012 in Provo, Utah.

College coaches everywhere will be holding their breath when helmets hit helmets this football season.

The threat of injury is the ultimate fear for any coach. But since NCAA officials have pledged to call targeting penalties more aggressively this fall, the threat of ejection could be much more frequent.

Elements of targeting

Walt Anderson, the Big 12?s coordinator of officials, presented key issues referees will look for on potential targeting calls. On any given hit, the risk of getting flagged will go up with:

Launching ? Leaving one?s feet to make a tackle. Defenders who launch themselves into the air make it impossible to change their body position before contact, which is a potential sign of recklessness.

Thrusting upward ? Forcing your arms, shoulders or head up into another player?s head or neck during a tackle. This is one of the more subtle and possibly controversial elements of targeting.

Striking about the head ? Using any part of your body to hit other players in the head directly. Usually fairly obvious, and covers clothesline-style hits.

Leading with the crown ? Putting your head down to spear someone with the crown of your helmet. Considered reckless and possibly dangerous to the tackler, this will be enforced no matter where the defender strikes.

Coaches across the country are torn as to whether the NCAA?s changes will help clean up the game or simply put more players on the sidelines.

"It?s good that there?s rules against targeting, but my disappointment is targeting is going to be called much more often," San Diego State coach Rocky Long said at Mountain West media days. "I?m guessing after close review, give it a few days and we?ll see that there were some missed calls. There?s a good chance you?re going to miss some of your best players."

The rules on targeting ? a penalty that generally protects players from hits to the head, spearing and hits when they?re defenseless ? have not changed. What has changed is that referees everywhere have been directed to look harder for targeting and eject the players who do it, said Walt Anderson, the Big 12?s coordinator of officials.

Anderson said in a media seminar that the goal was to clamp down on what he termed "avoidable hits." Officials will punish harshly high and intentionally vicious hits, but Anderson acknowledged even unintended head-to-head contact could get whistled.

That narrow line is where many coaches start getting anxious.

As various conferences hosted media days in the past weeks, there was clear apprehension from the nation?s top football programs. SEC coaches were stunned after hearing ACC official Doug Rhoads? comment that he would have ejected Jadeveon Clowney for his famed helmet-ejecting tackle in the Outback Bowl last year.

Coaches take the issue seriously when the word ejection is bandied about. With the season a month away, several said it?s become a much-discussed issue in their locker rooms.

"When you talk about disqualifying a kid or ejecting him from a game, I think of that as something that he had total control over, or he did something really stupid," New Mexico coach Bob Davie said. "With targeting, that angle changes in a split-second. If I?ve already had my aiming point at where I?m going to tackle and that ballcarrier drops at the last second and we go helmet-to-helmet, now you?re ejecting a kid from a game."

story continues below

Officials will look for players leaping off the ground for tackles, thrusting toward the head, striking around the head or leading with the crown of their helmets. Anyone flagged for targeting gets a penalty and sits out the rest of the game. If a player is called for targeting in the second half, he misses the first half of the next game.

Coaches watched clips of potential flagged hits from previous seasons, and several walked away shaking their heads.

"Some of the clips they were showing us, we were like, ?Really? That?s going to get a guy out of a game?? I?m very concerned," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said.

Coaches are briefing players on what kinds of hits might be penalized, scrutinizing not only where their players are hitting, but how. Petersen had a rugby coach talk to his team about how wrapping up more thoroughly could help players avoid high hits while still bringing opponents to the turf.

"I think wrapping up makes a big difference," he said. "That?s what you see in rugby ? they wrap up everything, and obviously they don?t get their head involved."

Other coaches agree that while the targeting enforcement initially will leave fans kicking and screaming, the long-term changes will help the game overall. Colorado State coach Jim McElwain said he was more worried about his players than the officials, and he would use penalties as "teachable moments" to correct his players? techniques.

"I think it?s something we needed to have happen, and now we need to adapt to it," he said. "There is some incidental contact, but it?s really going to the intent. The guys who are trying to use their head as a battering ram ? there are ways to avoid that."

Utah State coach Matt Wells said he?d take a wait-and-see approach to judging whether the rule will be effective.

"The thing that will be interesting to see play out is the angles the referees have and the challenge of calling it and understanding the intent of the defender," he said. "I think it?s fairly obvious, but it?s going to be a challenge because of the penalty."

How Mercedes-Benz R&D is using Google Glass (an inside look)

Vicki Thompson

In the lobby of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, President & CEO Johann Jungwirth shows off a touchscreen system for visitors to look up employees and alert them of their arrival through an email, call or text message.

Lauren Hepler, Economic Development Reporter, Silicon Valley Business Journal

Five years ago, having Google dictate precise directions from a reliable smartphone app was still a pipe dream.

Today, Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA) is working on a way to take advantage of the search engine giant's newest GPS-equipped device: Google Glass.

I took a tour of one of MBRDNA?s workshops in Palo Alto, Calif., where I tried out a Glass GPS prototype and a host of other in-car ?infotainment? systems.

The R&D arm of German luxury auto company Mercedes-Benz ? a division of Daimler AG ? will be consolidating and expanding its existing 150-person Silicon Valley presence in a new Sunnyvale office later this year (read about that here). In the meantime, they still have plenty of projects in the works to show off in Palo Alto.

According to MBRDNA President and CEO Johann Jungwirth, the company's ultimate goal on the Google Glass project is a "seamless" door-to-door transition between pedestrian directions and in-car GPS.

Jungwirth describes a scenario where users select a destination at home, get in the car and drive there, then exit the car and receive remaining directions as a walking route through Google Glass. That's instead of entering and re-entering destinations on in-car and out-of-car navigation systems.

Mercedes engineers told me the combination of Glass and auto navigation has some time to incubate before it hits the market, largely because most consumers still can?t get their hands on the pricey wearable computing devices.

In the meantime, I saw a demo of the Drive Kit Plus for iPhone. The smartphone plug-in accessory ? part of the company's broader "Car-to-X" communication technology R&D program ? sells for about $600 and works in Mercedes cars with a free app called Digital DriveStyle. The goal? Harnessing the smartphone to provide in-car entertainment and information.

Twitter faces calls in Britain to get tough on online abuse

LONDON | Sun Jul 28, 2013 10:35am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Twitter, the social media site, is under pressure in Britain to make it easier for Internet users to report abuse after more than 30,000 people petitioned it over the case of a feminist campaigner who says she was repeatedly threatened with rape.

Caroline Criado-Perez helped lobby the Bank of England to make a woman, 19th century novelist Jane Austen, the new face on the country's 10 pound note, to defuse criticism that women were under-represented on the currency.

She was then "targeted repeatedly with rape threats" by ill-wishers objecting to her activity, according to an online petition, which called on Twitter to urgently add a 'report abuse' button to its service.

Some users proposed a one-day boycott of Twitter to protest against what they said was its failure to address the issue.

Twitter's General Manager for the UK Tony Wang promised to suspend all accounts found to be in breach of its rules.

"We take online abuse seriously," he wrote, saying the company was testing ways to simplify reporting of abuse.

Oil spill in Thailand?s sea reaches tourist island

BANGKOK ? An oil spill that leaked from a pipeline has reached a popular tourist island in Thailand?s eastern sea despite continuous attempts to clean it up over the weekend, officials said Monday.

About 50 tons of crude oil spilled into the sea off Rayong province Saturday morning after a leak sprung in a pipeline operated by PTT Global Chemical Plc, a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company PTT Plc.

RELATED: BP PUT PROFITS AHEAD OF SAFETY: GOVERNMENT

Streaks of crude oil about 300 meters (984 feet) wide have marred the shore of Prao Bay on Samet Island, one of the most popular beach destinations among Thai and foreign tourists in the Gulf of Thailand, Rayong?s deputy provincial governor Supeepat Chongpanish said on Monday.

He said authorities have closed down the bay as 300 workers are working to remove the oil from the white beach and from the waters. Tourists have been warned against going near the area.

RELATED: RALLIERS CROWD NATIONAL MALL OPPOSING KEYSTONE PIPELINE

?The top priorities right now are to get rid of the oil on the sand and the seawaters, and to make sure the spill doesn?t spread to other shores,? Supeepat said. ?This is a very beautiful, white, sandy beach, so we want to make the spill go away as soon as possible.?

The nearby area has been declared a disaster zone by provincial authorities, and those affected by the spill will receive immediate assistance.

The company said it detected the leak when the crude oil from a tanker moored offshore was being transferred to the pipeline, 20 kilometers (11 miles) away from delivery at the refinery in Map Ta Phut, one of the largest industrial estates in Southeast Asia.

The company said in a statement Sunday that it had flown in an oil spill management experts and a plane from Singapore to get rid of the crude oil. The Thai Navy vessels also joined the cleanup efforts.

Party in Tunisian ruling coalition demands new government

By Tarek Amara

TUNIS (Reuters) - Pro- and anti-government demonstrators clashed in two Tunisian cities on Monday, witnesses said, as tensions rose over opposition efforts to oust the Islamist-led government.

Angry opposition protesters tried to storm municipal offices in Sidi Bouzid and stop employees there from working, residents said, sparking clashes between them and supporters of the Islamist Ennahda party, which leads the transitional government.

The army intervened to protect the offices and police fired tear gas, but residents said thousands of demonstrators were still gathering in the southern city, the cradle of the revolt that overthrew President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

"Now many of the protesters are coming in carrying batons and it looks like the situation is going to escalate because both sides are standing firm," one resident, Mahdi al-Hurshani, told Reuters by telephone.

Tunisians fear they may be plunging into one of the worst crises in their political transition since Ben Ali was forced to flee by an uprising that inspired unrest across the Arab world.

Opposition leaders say they might set up a rival "salvation government", an idea they will discuss later on Monday.

The secular opposition, angered by the second assassination in its ranks in six months and emboldened by the Egyptian army's ousting of an Islamist president this month, is now rejecting all concessions and reconciliation efforts by the government.

The unrest has erupted just weeks before the transitional Constituent Assembly was set to complete a draft of a new constitution. The opposition now demands that the 217-member body be dissolved. Seventy lawmakers have left it and set up a sit-in outside the Assembly offices in Tunis's Bardo square.

Cabinet ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the growing political crisis, a government official said, and a message from the prime minister to the nation is expected soon.

In Bardo square, rival protesters threw rocks at each other and police intervened to disperse them. Opposition sources said security forces beat one of the 70 lawmakers who had quit the Constituent Assembly. He was taken to hospital.

"The prime minister will be held accountable for any drop of blood spilled in the Bardo sit-in," opposition figure Manji Rahawi said.

Tunisia's powerful labour unions were also set to meet on Monday to discuss more strike action. On Friday, the unions shut down much of the country for a strike to mourn leftist politician Mohamed Brahmi who was assassinated last week.

The government says Brahmi's assailants used the same weapon that killed another secular leader, Chokri Belaid, on February 6.

Its critics say it has not done enough to investigate or stop the attacks it has blamed on hardline Salafist militants.

Many joining the swelling street protests cite anger with the instability in Tunisia as well as economic stagnation.

Others are frustrated that a constitution, promised one year after the 2011 uprising, has yet to be completed and are suspicious of the Islamist-led transitional government.

Chinese scalpers booking up all Genius Bar appointments & selling online

Beijing Morning News?reports that local ticket scalpers have found a new way to make money on Apple: booking up all available Genius Bar appointments and then offering them for sale online.

Ticket scalpers usually make their money by buying large quantities of event tickets as soon as they go on sale, and then illegally selling them for more than face value once the event is sold-out. With Genius Bar appointments, they don?t even need to fork out cash in the first place: just use a bunch of email addresses to make the appointments, then advertise them online.

Appointments sell for 10- yuan ($1.60-6.40) in a country where the average monthly salary is equivalent to $580.?A?Beijing Morning News reporter found there were no appointments available on the Apple site for iPhone, iPad or iPod. They contacted one of the advertisers asking for an appointment the next day, and were offered a choice of two local stores and two time slots. The reporter was sent login details for the booking by instant messenger, and was then able to access the booking on the Apple site to change the details to their own.

The reporter contacted Apple for comment, and had not received a reply at the time of writing.

Thanks, Numble.

Sex and video games: Virtual reality erotica may be the HolyGrail

Video games

A small company in Irvine, CA, has started working on what it claims to be "the world's first erotic virtual reality game" for the Oculus Rift.

Wicked Paradise

A small company in Irvine, CA, has started working on what it claims to be "the world's first erotic virtual reality game" for the Oculus Rift.

Video games stand apart from the rest of modern technology because of the medium's immunity to pornography. Perhaps it's because gamers ? historically male teenagers and twentysomethings ? just aren't into porn, right?

OK, that can't be it.

The more likely reason is that it's really, really hard to blend sex and video games in a convincing way. Sure, on TV's "30 Rock," fictional character Tracy Jordan dreamed up a game "where characters get weird with each other for golden points." But until recently, all that reality produced were Japanese dating sims, clumsy hook-ups in "Second Life" and silly bouncing cars in "Grand Theft Auto." Even Paul Trowe, the CEO of Replay Games ? which recently rebooted the cheesy and borderline-offensive "Leisure Suit Larry" franchise ? admitted to NBC News that the infamous game "isn't about sex; it's about the absence of sex."

"Heavy Rain" was considered groundbreaking for the quality of its voice-over and motion-capture work when it was released in 2010

Heavy Rain / Sony

"Heavy Rain" may have been visually groundbreaking when it was released in 2010, but the horrendously awkward sex scene is one of the main things that kept players from truly suspending disbelief.

Video game virtual sex has been on an upswing in recent years, with varying degrees of success. Character-driven games like "Dragon Age" and "Heavy Rain" created somber novelesque sex scenes with a photorealism never before rendered in polygons, but drew complaints that the illusion fell flat. Character movements are a bit inhuman, or worse, players are required to participate in goofy ways, like using a PS3's dual joysticks to unhook a virtual bra.

And that's the problem.

The closer developers get to "virtual sex," the greater the risk of falling into the uncanny valley ? our natural revulsion to the not-quite human. (This divide is what makes "The Incredibles" more watchable than "Polar Express.") What will it take to bridge the valley? The latest virtual-reality goggles and full-body motion sensing a la Xbox Kinect, working in tandem, says Jeroen Van den Bosch, the latest entrepreneur to seek this Holy Grail.

Think 'wicked'
Belgium-born Van den Bosch runs a small startup in Irvine, Calif., and claims to have a working prototype of "the world's first erotic virtual reality adventure game."

Jeroen Van den Bosch, the founder of Wicked Paradise.

Wicked Paradise

Jeroen Van den Bosch, the founder of Wicked Paradise.

Exactly how players hook up in "Wicked Paradise" isn?t something Van den Bosch will detail during the development phase. But he claims his game will succeed where others have failed because the visual quality of computer-generated images (CGI) is finally able to make practically life-like characters.

Van den Bosch also has a not-so-secret weapon ? a virtual reality (VR) gaming headset heralded as the first VR product that actually works. The Oculus Rift ? high-tech goggles through which users see 3-D panoramic images that adjust in real time ? promises "total immersion" for the player.

"So in real life when you're reaching out to grab that door handle" (or whatever else one might want to reach out and grab in an "erotic" game), "in virtual reality you can see yourself do exactly the same thing," Van den Bosch said.

"It's awesome," he says of his as-yet-unseen game.

Erotica or smut?
Just don?t call the game "pornography."

"Porn is making something that you watch; we're making something that you do,? Van den Bosch told NBC News.

Van den Bosch working with one of the motion-capture actresses for "Wicked Paradise." He told NBC News that his work on "Wicked Paradise" was inspired by recent games like "Heavy Rain" and "The Last of Us" that were praised for the quality of their motion-capture and voiceover work that helped create realistic and dynamic characters with which players could interact.

Road to VR

Van den Bosch working with one of the motion-capture actresses for "Wicked Paradise." He told NBC News that his work on "Wicked Paradise" was inspired by recent games like "Heavy Rain" and "The Last of Us" that were praised for the quality of their motion-capture and voiceover work that helped create realistic and dynamic characters with which players could interact.

?We have thousands of very well-designed shooter games that all cater to negative emotions ? terror and fear," Van den Bosch said. "But we very rarely have any attempts to create positive emotions like passion, seduction, and love."

He?s not alone in this observation.

Modern game design hasn't exactly evolved to make different kinds of relationships and interactions with game characters possible, explained Belinda Van Sickle, the president and CEO of Women in Games International, which works to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the games industry worldwide.

"The template game mechanic for so many games is just shooting things," Van Sickle told NBC News. "And that's just because: sex is not simple. Violence is simple!"

Van den Bosch, too, is critical of the game industry's double standard of inviting people to consume horrendously violent work while simultaneously abhorring anything that has the least bit to do with sex.

Nonetheless, news of "Wicked Paradise" has been met with sarcastic smirks if not outright disdain. "This is why we can't have nice things," BuzzFeed's game critic quipped in an article about "the horny dudes" who are "making a porno" for the Oculus Rift.

Like its science fiction counterpart "Mass Effect," "Dragon Age: Origins" drew fierce praise and condemnation alike for its frank depictions of sex and LGBT relationships.

BioWare

Like its science fiction counterpart "Mass Effect," "Dragon Age: Origins" drew fierce praise and condemnation alike for its frank depictions of sex and LGBT relationships. Despite breaking new ground, many gamers and even the game's own developers now admit that the blocky animations and Enya-esque soundtrack for the sex scenes made it hard to appreciate them for anything but their sheer camp value.

Rather than a ?porno,? Van den Bosch prefers to compare ?Wicked Paradise? to ?Game of Thrones? ? something that has says is "very sexually explicit but still has a great storyline."

Will it catch on?
Whether or not the eight-person team behind "Wicked Paradise" is truly a group of inspired artists or just a group of "horny dudes," Van Sickle told NBC News that she doubts the mainstream game industry will change its outlook about sex in video games any time soon.

Sickle said that since the Entertainment Software Rating Board's main purpose is to protect "the video game industry from becoming a target" of public criticism, she would be surprised if the organization starting relaxing its stringent standards around sexual material (compared to, say, violent content) any time soon.

"Leisure Suit Larry" was one of the first games to popularize the dating simulation/adventure game hybrid for American audiences. While the series has become synonymous with the salacious underbelly of video games, Paul Trowe, president of Replay Games, insists that "Leisure Suit Larry" is more about "the absence of sex" than anything explicit or raunchy. His company recently released "Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded," the latest installment in the series, to middling reviews.

The ESRB rating system maintains a powerful enough grip over many of the most lucrative parts of the industry that the vast majority of game developers making material like Van den Bosch's don't bother submitting games for a rating. Receiving an Adults-Only (AO) rating from the ESRB preemptively shuts it off from millions of players, since none of the major game consoles or video game retailers like Wal-Mart or Best Buy will allow AO-rated games anywhere near their customers.

As with the Internet, Van Sickle thinks that sexually explicit material in video games is an eventual inevitability ? as long as hardware developers like Oculus VR keep their promise to not regulate content. And, well, that may not be such a bad thing after all.

"There's a market for adult video games, because adults play video games and adults like sex," Van Sickle said. "So I'd like it see to grow and become something above-ground, rather than what it is right now."

(AP) ? One of three women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade made her first public appearance at a concert featuring the rapper Nelly a day after her abductor pleaded guilty to kidnap and rape charges.

Amanda Berry showed up at the daylong RoverFest concert in Cleveland on Saturday night, walking on stage with her family and waving at the cheering crowd. Wearing sunglasses and dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt, Berry smiled broadly while acknowledging the applause, but she didn't address the crowd. Nelly called Berry back to the stage after his music set.

The appearance came a day after Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver, pleaded guilty to 937 counts in a deal that will send him to prison for life without parole, plus 1,000 years.

Berry, now 27, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight disappeared between 2002 and 2004 when they were 16, 14 and 20 years old. They escaped in May when Berry kicked out part of a door and called to neighbors for help.

Shane French, the host of the syndicated talk radio show Rover's Morning Glory on WMMS in Cleveland, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Sunday that he was surprised when Berry showed up at the annual festival. French, who goes by the name Rover on radio, said he had issued an impromptu invitation on his show a few weeks ago but didn't know she was listening.

"I just said that she had 10 years of partying to make up for and she should come," French said.

He said he was surprised when security guards told him Berry had arrived.

French said Berry at first refused to go on stage but then agreed and asked if he would go with her.

"She didn't say why she decided to come, but some of her family members told me they listen to my show every day and had been to RoverFest in the past," French said.

He said a couple of the women with Berry cried, overcome by the crowd's cheers for Berry.

"I didn't see her cry, but I think she was pretty overwhelmed by the response that the crowd gave her," he said of Berry. "She just seemed to be having a great time."

French said he hasn't invited her to appear on his radio show.

"I figured that when she want to tell her story, she'll make the arrangements, and it would have been pointless to even ask," French said.

Castro, 53, who was arrested and jailed shortly after the women escaped, was accused of raping and beating the three repeatedly. He also fathered a 6-year-old daughter with Berry, authorities say.

The women said they were relieved by the conviction and looking forward to the end of the legal proceedings.

Each said she had been kidnapped after accepting a ride from Castro, who had remained friends with DeJesus' family and attended vigils over the years marking her disappearance.

Castro was accused of restraining the women, sometimes chaining them to a pole in a basement, to a bedroom heater or inside a van. The indictment included two counts of aggravated murder related to accusations that he punched and starved one of the women until she miscarried.

Earlier this month, the three women offered thanks on YouTube for emotional and financial backing they've received since going "through hell and back."

Monitor Your CPU With A Real Tachometer

Whether you're a tinkerer with a custom rig, or you just aren't sure why your computer's fans are running, checking your CPU usage is a pretty common task. Instead of using a boring on-screen activity monitor though, you can hook up your machine to a car tachometer for constant feedback.

This hack comes courtesy of ivancreations, who created an entire PC monitoring block from real-world components. The full instructions are on his blog, and needless to say, they're pretty complicated. If you can makes heads and tails of his plans though, the results speak for themselves.

While the tachometer is my favorite part of the build, he also wired up some LED light grids to illustrate other vital system information as well. If you think you're up to it, or just want a closer look, be sure to check out the source link.

Head Coach Rob Chudzinski transcript

BEREA, Ohio - Opening statement:

?Good afternoon. Just want to start off with Ryan Miller. He was injured early in practice with a head injury during drills. He was taken to the hospital. Our medical staff treated him on the field and was able to transport him to the hospital. At this time, Ryan is doing well. He is responsive and sounds like things are better at this point. We will continue to give you updates on that. I plan on visiting Ryan tonight and seeing how he is doing.?

On Ryan Miller staying overnight in the hospital:

?I don?t know that.?

On what exactly happened to cause Ryan Miller?s injury:

?It was one-on-one blocking drills. I did not see it. Obviously, two guys were going against each other and hit against each other.?

On the message to the team after a player getting injured:

?We got together. We said a prayer, said we would keep Ryan in our thoughts and I would give them updates as we got them. We needed to get back to work at that point and focus back on practice.?

On the team responding to his message:

?I thought they did a great job. It really says a lot about them, our coaches, our staff and our players to be able to do that. This team is a family and when something happens to a family member like that, it?s tough. These guys did a great job of staying focused and getting a lot of work done that we needed to get done.?

On the reaction of a player getting injured for the first time as a head coach:

?Well, you take the lead in these situations. That?s what I did. Again, I look forward to being able to see Ryan tonight and get a chance to visit with him.?

On Phil Taylor practicing:

?He went through individuals today. We will continue to monitor and look at him, eventually upgrade as the time comes.?

On offense working on screen passes:

?It was something that was in our installation today. After a few days, we get those guys rushing up the field so much. Screens have always been something that Norv has really excelled, teams that Norv has coached. I have been fortunate to be around Norv and learn a thing or two about screens.?

On executing the screen play:

?There is a lot of coordination and timing between the offensive line and the running backs; the timing of it happening, knowing the rushes and the right people to do it against, as well.?

On quarterbacks having a better day:

?They did. I thought the offense as a whole had a lot better day. That?s one of the things you?d like to see happen on a day-to-day basis, so it?s not always one side of the ball winning. You?d like to see it where it is offense one day, defense the next day, and when there?s a back-and-forth competition. At the end of the day, you need a balanced team. You have to be able to win games in this league different ways. Sometimes they are going to be high-scoring, sometimes they are going to be low-scoring. Sometimes your defense is going to be dominating or sometimes they are going to be struggling and vice versa. Having a balanced team is a key and it is something we have talked a lot about with the guys.?

On disappointment of having to practice inside due to weather:

?I was hoping to get out. When I came in here, early in the morning, it was drizzling, and I saw the forecast for the day. We had a lot of wetness on the field. So, it was a combination of the forecast and the fields all being wet and not wanting to tear those up.?

On how he feels about the skirmishes that happened in practice:

?I like the attitude, the competitiveness. We have to keep it under control, be smart. That?s the kind of energy you like.?

On the changes of practicing inside, rather than outside:

?It doesn?t change as much. Obviously, we didn?t go full pads. For the first day of full pads, I didn?t want to be inside, on the turf. We will be full pads tomorrow. It?s just a tighter space that we have to work with in here, but we were able to get a lot done.?

On waiting to learn Miller was going to be OK:

?It?s difficult. I was very concerned about him. I went over and gave him a tap when he was going out. At that time he was moving around a little bit so that was encouraging.?

On knowing how long he was unconscious:

?I don?t know.?

On knowing where Dion Lewis fits into the offense:

?I think I?m just learning. He?s a guy that we haven?t seen a lot. Running backs really tend to show more when the pads come on. You see their running skills and the blocking schemes develop a little bit better. Like you saw today, with pads on it?s a lot different. We will continue to look at him as well as all of those guys. We will put them in situations so they can show what they can do.?

On huddling players at mid-field, whether he updated them on Miller: ?I did. It was. I gave them an update on Ryan.?

On whether he sustained a concussion: ?I think right now calling it a head injury is most accurate until we get more details about it. I don?t want to classify it or call it something that it could be.?

On whether it was a neck injury: ?It was just

a head injury.?

On scrambling to get the offense ready for the first game ?It?s right around the corner. It seems like time flies. It will be here before you know it. ?Again, we have a lot of work to do. I?ve been pleased with what we?ve gotten done in the last couple of days. Particularly seeing things like we talked about when things didn?t look so well on one side of the ball. Guys were bouncing back, understanding and making the corrections and executing better on the field. I think that?s the process that you are looking for guys to go through as we are going toward our first game. We will continue to install things in the course of the next week and week and-a-half. We?ll get ready to go out and play.?

On handling a false start during practice: ?You saw that, didn?t you? Sometimes, it just depends. There is not always a hard, fast rule with things. In that particular case it was a point of emphasis.?

On whether the player was being singled out for an accumulation of mistakes: ?It was a point of emphasis at that particular time. In other cases it could be an accumulation.?

On how cohesive he expects the offensive line to be: ?Well, with a new system and new terminology it will take some time. Those guys in my opinion and in my experience are the toughest to coordinate, to get that communication that you need to get those guys playing together that you want. That does take some time. Having George Warhop here, he?s done a fantastic job. He has a relationship with them. I think that has really helped in that way. They are learning a new system, they are learning new terminology. George is here and he can translate to help get them on the right page.?

On Joe Thomas being a good teacher and translator: ?Joe is actually used to it. He has heard the terminology before. When I was here before there are a lot of similarities from that standpoint. He?s done a great job from a leadership role. He?s showing guys the right way and the direction we want to go.?

On FB Brock Bolen: ?He has a calf strain.?

On OL Oniel Cousins: ?He has a knee sprain. I?m sorry, he has an ankle sprain. It will probably be a couple of weeks.?
