Beth Phoenix and Natalya taunt Eve on Twitter

At WWE Vengeance, Eve put on a competitive match with current Divas Champion Beth Phoenix. Through use of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and sheer athleticism, the brainy beauty left many - including The Glamazon herself - surprised. But as WWE.com tried to catch up with Eve, the former Divas Champion said she couldn't talk, as her ring gear had gone "missing."

Eve discovered the culprits via Twitter - as @TheBethPhoenix and @NatbyNature?tweeted pictures of themselves posing with @EveMarieTorres' golden ring attire. For two "Sisters of Destruction" who are supposed to be "pin-up strong," the two may have left the WWE Universe wondering why they have sunk so low.

@NatbyNature:?I dont know what's worse, the smell of @EveMarieTorres?boots or her lack of fashion sense?

@NatbyNature:?@TheBethPhoenix?we need to have a locker room meeting on "people" with stinky boots. Gross.

@NatbyNature: @TheBethPhoenix?I love how cute we look in this photo. But not a fan of cheap jewelry.

@NatbyNature: You left this in the locker room, @EveMarieTorres. Finders keepers, losers...

@NatbyNature:?I'm taking matters into my own hands @EveMarieTorres. Your boots smell as bad as your lousy moonsault.

@TheBethPhoenix:No, @NatbyNature?and I didn't go dumpster diving. We just borrowed @EveMarieTorres?stuff.

@TheBethPhoenix:I've always wanted a cheap flea-market, turn your skin green necklace. Thanks, @EveMarieTorres!

@TheBethPhoenix:?I guess @EveMarieTorres?career isnt the only thing going down the toilet...

?

@TheBethPhoenix:?Putting @EveMarieTorres' crap where it belongs

@TheBethPhoenix:?Ooops!!! Ive been a very very naughty Glamazon ;) @NatbyNature?why do u let me act so bad??!!

@TheBethPhoenix:?I enjoy breaking hearts as much as breaking bones. Who's next???#crybaby?#crycry

Never one to back down, Eve responded to The "Sisters of Destruction" with some biting words of her own on Twitter.

?

@EveMarieTorres:?@TheBethPhoenix?@NatbyNature?Talk about me all you want but take my things??#OhHeckNo?We've just entered vale tudo zone. Hope u're prepared.

@EveMarieTorres:?All the diamonds in the world couldn't make u classy. RT @NatbyNature: @TheBethPhoenix?isn't that cheap looking? I'm a Tiifany's girl myself

@EveMarieTorres:?Actually, it's just begun. RT @TheBethPhoenix: I guess @EveMarieTorres?career isnt the only thing going down the toilet

16 NYC cops plead not guilty in corruption probe

An anonymous tip about a crooked cop grew during the past three years into a sweeping internal corruption probe on the under-the-table practice of fixing tickets, with dozens of wiretaps, 10,000 intercepted calls and an officer undercover as a barber in a sting, authorities said.

Thirteen New York Police Department officers, two sergeants and a lieutenant were slapped with criminal charges Friday, just three days after the embarrassing arrests of five officers in a separate gun-running probe.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said it was "difficult" to have to announce for the second time in a week that his officers had been arrested for misconduct.

"These misdeeds tarnish the good name and reputation of the vast majority of police officers who perform their duties honestly," he said.

Kelly said the probe included 300 cases that are being handled internally. Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said he hoped the criminal charges send a message that corruption would not be tolerated. The city lost about $2 million in killed-off tickets, he said.

The majority of the arrested are officials with the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, arguably the most powerful law enforcement union in the nation, with 23,000 members. Union leaders say the practice of making a ticket disappear for a friend or family member was not only sanctioned, it was condoned at the highest levels of the nation's biggest police department.

Union President Patrick Lynch vowed that when the dust settled, they'd prove it.

"Taking care of your family, taking care of your friends is not a crime," he said. "To take a courtesy and turn it into a crime is wrong."

Hundreds of union members went to support the officers, some in suits, others dressed in jeans and sweat shirts, clogging the street near the Bronx courthouse, filling the hallways and applauding in court after the officers left. Detective Steven McDonald, a city hero paralyzed decades ago, was in the courtroom in a wheelchair, with an American flag on this lap.

The officers pleaded not guilty to hundreds of charges including misconduct, grand larceny, records tampering and obstructing governmental administration. Among those charged was Jennara Cobb, an internal affairs bureau lieutenant who pleaded not guilty to charges she leaked information to union officials about the probe.

As a result of her meeting, word quickly spread and union delegates started to alter the way they fixed tickets, prosecutor Jonathan Ortiz said.

"The investigation was significantly compromised because of her actions," he said.

Her attorney, Philip Karasyk, said she had been unfairly singled out.

"That wiretap was leaking like a sieve," he said.

The case started with an anonymous tip in 2009 that a 40th Precinct officer, Jose Ramos, was selling drugs in his barbershop. An undercover officer hired as a barber monitored Ramos, who also was accused of shuttling drugs while in his police uniform.

Story: NYPD ticket-fixing charges expected

"He sold his shield, he violated his oath," Assistant District Attorney Omer Wiceyk said.

Ramos was recorded saying he "stopped caring about the law a long time ago," the prosecutor said.

Ramos pleaded not guilty to drug and other charges. His attorney, John Sandleitner, said the charges were ridiculous.

"The DA's office basically made a circus of this," he said.

While officers were listening to Ramos on a wiretap, they caught calls from people seeing if Ramos could fix tickets for them, prosecutors said. The conversations led to more wiretaps that produced evidence of additional officers across the borough having similar conversations, they said.

There are generally three ways the citations are fixed: They are voided by a ranking official, a copy is ripped up before it reaches court or the officer doesn't appear on the day of the summons.

Kelly said the case exposed departmental weaknesses that were swiftly addressed. The NYPD installed a new computer system that tracks tickets and makes it much more difficult to tamper with the paper trail. Kelly also created a new unit to sit in on traffic court testimony and comb through paperwork to ensure none of the methods is being wrongly employed.

He said the practice was wrong and can't be glossed over as "courtesies" or as part of an acceptable culture.

"Members of the public don't accept favoritism," he said. "They resent it, as well they should."

Earlier this week, federal prosecutors in Manhattan brought conspiracy and other charges against five current and three former officers, alleging they were part of a gun-running ring. In two other recent unrelated federal cases, one officer was charged with arresting a black man without cause and using a racial slur to describe the suspect and another was charged with using a law enforcement database to try to trump up charges against an innocent man.

Longtime police historian Thomas Reppetto said it's "not the best time for the department."

"Does it rise to the level of the great scandals that have occurred in the past? No," he said. "Ticket fixing is not on the same level as drug dealing."

Kelly said the cases could undermine morale, "But I look at the work done every day and it's outstanding."

The highest-ranking union members charged in the probe were Joseph Anthony, Michael Hernandez and Brian McGuckin.

The other officers were union representatives, and all were stationed in Bronx precincts: Virgilio Bencosme, Luis R. Rodriguez, Jaime Payan, Eugene P. O'Reilly, Christopher Manzi and Jason Cenizal.

Ramos' supervisor, sergeant Jacob G. Solorzano, also was charged.

The officers pleaded not guilty and were released.

While on the wiretap, investigators also uncovered that three other officers and a sergeant covered up an assault for a friend, prosecutors said. Sergeant Marc Manara and Officers Ruben Peralta, Jeffrey Regan and Christopher Scott, all from the same precinct, were arrested as well. The friend was arrested on the initial assault charge, prosecutors said. The officers pleaded not guilty.

In addition, three others were charged along with Ramos with insurance fraud and other crimes.

The last serious corruption scandal for the NYPD was the so-called Dirty 30 case from the early 1990s. More than 33 officers from Harlem's 30th Precinct were implicated in the probe, with most pleading guilty to charges including stealing cash from drug dealers, taking bribes, beating suspects and lying under oath to cover their tracks.

Game 7: Close call helps Cards extend lead to 5-2

A close call goes to the Cardinals in the fifth inning.

With first base open, Texas intentionally walked David Freese to load the bases with two outs. Scott Feldman fell behind 3-1 on Yadier Molina, then threw a strike. The full-count pitch also looked like a strike, right on the outside corner, but this time Feldman didn't get the call from plate umpire Jerry Layne.

Ball four, 4-2 Cardinals.

Hard to argue with walking Freese in that spot, even though Molina has a clutch pedigree. Freese has just been on such a tear lately, especially in big situations.

C.J. Wilson came on and hit Rafael Furcal with his first pitch, forcing in another run. Skip Schumaker strikes out to end the inning.

St. Louis leads 5-2.

Texas pitchers have issued 40 walks in the World Series, tying the record set by the 1997 Florida Marlins.

___

Allen Craig makes a leaping catch at the left-field fence in the sixth, probably taking a home run away from Nelson Cruz. Chris Carpenter works a 1-2-3 sixth, and the Cardinals are nine outs from their second World Series championship in six seasons.

___

Big sequence in the top of the fifth inning.

Ian Kinsler hit a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by Elvis Andrus. Carpenter fell behind 3-1 on Josh Hamilton ? the only strike may have been a generous call. Hamilton then swung at an inside pitch that might have been ball four and lofted a foul popup wide of third. Freese caught it at the dugout railing for the second out.

Freese had a similar chance Thursday night but was unable to make the play.

Michael Young struck out to end the inning.

Feldman has replaced Texas starter Matt Harrison in the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals still lead 3-2.

___

Harrison worked a scoreless fourth. He pounded Skip Schumaker in on the hands, shattering his bat on a groundout, and retired Carpenter on an easy fly with runners at second and third to end the inning.

Furcal, dropped from his leadoff spot to seventh in the lineup, is 2 for 2 with a pair of singles.

___

Craig hits his third home run of the World Series to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead after three innings.

Craig's opposite-field fly to right appeared to carry and carry before landing in the Cardinals' bullpen as St. Louis relievers danced with glee.

Wilson is warming up again for Texas, with Harrison due up third in the fourth inning.

___

With runners at the corners in the second, Carpenter retired Andrus on a comebacker to end the inning.

Carpenter is the first pitcher to make three starts in one World Series since Curt Schilling for Arizona in 2001. Carpenter, who beat Texas 3-2 in Game 1 and took a no-decision in Game 5, is 6-0 at home in his postseason career. His eight career postseason wins tie him with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera for most among active pitchers.

___

Harrison looked more comfortable in the second. He was helped out when Young made a nice stretch at first to complete a double play.

Score tied at 2 in the bottom of the third inning.

___

Back and forth again.

Texas scored twice in the top of the first inning, only to have the Cardinals tie it right away on Freese's two-run double to left-center in the bottom half.

What a run for Freese! Two-run triple Thursday night to tie it with two outs in the ninth inning, followed by his homer in the 11th to win it. All after the hometown kid (Freese grew up in a St. Louis suburb) was MVP of the NL championship series.

Molina flied out to the center field fence to end the inning, with Hamilton making a nice catch to keep it tied at 2.

Hamilton and Young had RBI doubles in the first off Carpenter.

Harrison got into trouble with consecutive two-out walks to Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman. Wilson began warming in the bullpen.

___

It didn't take long for the Rangers to make a mistake. Kinsler opened the game with a single, then was promptly picked off first base by Molina, the Cardinals' strong-armed catcher.

Not sure if Kinsler was trying to bluff a stolen base attempt and simply slipped, or if he was really going and felt as though he didn't get a good jump. Either way, he stopped and got caught in between and was picked off pretty easily.

Pained look on manager Ron Washington's face.

But that changed quickly. Andrus walked and Washington was undeterred, putting Andrus in motion on a hit-and-run. Hamilton ripped an RBI double past Pujols at first base and Young fisted a run-scoring double inside the right field line to make it 2-0 Texas.

That was all Carpenter allowed. He struck out Adrian Beltre and retired Nelson Cruz on a groundout.

___

Game 7 of the World Series. The most exciting night in baseball.

Except for last night, that is. What could possibly top that?

Following one of the most thrilling finishes in postseason history, the Rangers and Cardinals are back at it tonight, less than 20 hours after Freese's 11th-inning homer for St. Louis pushed the Series to the limit.

Truly, a Fall Classic.

Winner takes all tonight. First pitch is 8:05 p.m. EDT at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals seem to have everything on their side ? momentum, history and their No. 1 pitcher on the mound. After much debate about what manager Tony La Russa would do, Carpenter is set to start on three days' rest for the second time in his career.

The first time was Game 2 of the NL division series in Philadelphia, and that one didn't go very well. But the 36-year-old right-hander says he learned a few things about how to handle pitching on short rest.

The home team has won eight straight Game 7s in the World Series, a streak started by the Cardinals in 1982 against Milwaukee. This is the first time the Series has gone the distance since 2002, when the Angels beat San Francisco.

Harrison gets the ball for Texas. Let down by his defense, he was pulled in the fourth inning of a Game 3 defeat.

Twice, the Rangers were one strike away from their first World Series championship Thursday night. They couldn't nail it down.

Now, after such a painful defeat, can they possibly recover? The last team to win Game 7 of the World Series on the road was the Pittsburgh Pirates at Baltimore in 1979.

Almost lost in all the back-and-forth excitement Thursday night were injuries to several key players. Cruz strained his right groin and Mike Napoli twisted his left ankle, but both Rangers sluggers are in the Game 7 lineup.

Matt Holliday, however, was removed from the St. Louis roster with a bruised right wrist. Craig starts in left field in place of Holliday.

La Russa also dropped a slumping Furcal to seventh in the lineup and Schumaker to eighth. Second baseman Ryan Theriot is at the top of the order and Craig bats second in front of Pujols.

Holliday's absence might not be such a terrible thing for the Cardinals at this stage.

Sure, it shortens their lineup. He's a dangerous hitter and a legitimate All-Star. But he really struggled with his swing during the World Series (.158) and he hurt the Cardinals with his glove and on the bases in Game 6, too.

With Holliday out, Freese moves up to fifth in the lineup, perhaps providing better protection for Pujols and Berkman. Freese has been a clutch hitter throughout the postseason, never more so than Thursday night.

Speedy outfielder Adron Chambers, a rookie, replaced Holliday on the active roster. Fox sideline reporter Ken Rosenthal says Chambers was grabbing a bite to eat with his girlfriend at a TGI Friday's when he saw the scroll on television saying he'd been added to the roster for Game 7. That's how he found out.

Clear skies at Busch Stadium. The temperature is 51 degrees, with a little light wind.

All set to play ball.

Meadows, MSOA stand up to cancer

The Meadows Racetrack & Casino and its community of harness racing horsemen and horsewomen stood up to cancer Saturday with two special races to help fund breast cancer awareness.

The track and the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association, which coordinated the event, donated all commissions from the races to the Magee Women?s Hospital Breast Cancer Program. Funds raised Saturday will enhance the more than $12,000 already provided by The Meadows and the MSOA through previous events.

In the Breast Cancer Awareness Trot, which featured female drivers, Cherie Keith guided Sweet Elly Mae to victory while Danita Harvey and her daughter Nikki Harvey finished second and third, respectively, with Yankee Elizabeth and Stiletto.

Dean Zaimes captured the Breast Cancer Awareness Pace, which was limited to drivers with fewer than 50 wins this year at The Meadows, behind Captain Greg. Tyler Stillings (Odds On BP) and Brad Provost (Therealshowstopper) completed the ticket.

Tony Hall won seven of the remaining 11 races on the card, including five in a row beginning with Race 7.

Modern Combat 3 tops iPhone Games of the Week (Appolicious)

Leading the charge this week is Gameloft?s first-person shooter, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation. It?s a pretty impressive Call of Duty look-alike with great production values and a huge multiplayer offering that?ll keep you busy throughout the weekend. But it?s not the only great game we saw this week. There are four other phenomenal contenders you should pick up as well. Read about all of them below.

Gameloft?s latest first-person shooter has some astounding graphics and a presentation that might make you think it belongs on today?s video game consoles. In fact, that?s not far off ? Modern Combat apes the popular Call of Duty series very well. Like many of Gameloft?s other FPS titles, MC3 uses gyroscopic aiming controls mixed with buttons to give you a pretty smooth shooter experience. It?s brimming with content and features 13 missions in its single-player story and a full online multiplayer mode. Leaderboards, weapons you can customize with new parts, and seven game modes for online play make Modern Combat 3 a pretty good value.

Asteroids are threatening to destroy Earth, and you?re its last line of defense. The end of the world is imminent, and the best hope of humanity is to evacuate the planet while you try to divert asteroids from their impact trajectories by exploding missiles near them. Eve of Impact is simple but beautiful with a great sci-fi aesthetic. It?s probably much better on the iPad ? it could use a little more screen real-estate on smaller devices ? but for a straightforward arcade experience, there?s something both haunting and mesmerizing about this one, thanks to its great presentation.

Like The Legend of Zelda series, Mage Gauntlet taps into that action role-playing spirit that made for some fantastic 16-bit games way back in the days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis. But with some tight, funny writing and plenty of hats to find and try on, Mage Gauntlet differentiates itself as a great iOS experience. Gamers who grew up in the 1990s will feel right at home with Mage Gauntlet?s old-school aesthetic and gameplay, but this one just has a lot of content to offer. It?s all swords and sorcery, and at the end of the day, who could ask for anything more?

Riptide GP (iPhone, iPad) $4.99

I?m usually not one for racing games, but Riptide finds a way to make old things new again by introducing some great-looking water with strong, working physics to the equation. This is a racing title in which you race jet skis. It packs some high-quality 3-D graphics to drive the immersion into the game, along with three different game modes, and mixes a few stunts in with the races to keep things interesting. You can also earn new jet skis as you race and qualify with better times, and best of all, it sports Game Center leaderboards, which helps engender real-life competition. Mostly, though, it?s just fun to bounce off great-looking virtual waves.

The developers over at Adult Swim Games have kind of cornered the market on weird, slightly dark, hilarious concepts. Bring Me Sandwiches!! is another in a long line of these. You play a fast-food employee who has to serve sandwiches to a monstrous alien in order to keep it happy. Your job in this 2-D platformer is to gather just about anything you can to make sandwiches, but the game also tosses objects at you, and you?ll often include rude people or animals in your entrees. It?s a goofy game with a fun aesthetic and a great premise, and it?s definitely fun to incapacitate annoying teenagers and pile them on to bread slices to feed to a giant alien.

China paper says U.S. solar complaint driven by envy (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? An anti-dumping complaint filed by U.S. solar firms against their Chinese counterparts is driven by envy at China's rapid growth in the field and goes against global efforts to fight climate change, a major state-run newspaper said on Sunday.

Seven U.S. solar manufacturers this month asked the Obama administration to impose duties of more than 100 percent on China solar imports, which they said were unfairly undercutting U.S. prices and destroying American jobs.

In a front-page commentary, The China Energy News, published by Communist Party mouthpiece the People's Daily, said this was a foolish, misguided attempt at trade protectionism driven by jealousy.

"In the space of just five years, the rapid development of the Chinese companies has attracted envious eyes overseas," wrote Wang Yuehai, secretary general of the All China Federation of Industry and Commerce's new energy commission.

President Barack Obama had failed to live up to his promises to boost growth by supporting the renewable energy sector, leaving China to lead the way, he said.

"The U.S. solar industry is using the awkwardness of the Obama government to try and force it into trade protectionism and attack the rapid development of China's solar industry," Wang wrote.

The complaint also runs counter to the consensus reached by the two countries to develop clean energy, an important sector to support as the world tries to stimulate growth at a time of global financial crisis, he added.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time in U.S.-China trade relations, which are plagued by U.S. concerns over market access in China, Beijing's treatment of intellectual property rights, and stern debate over the value of China's currency.

China's Commerce Ministry has already warned the United States not to take protectionist measures over the solar energy issue that could harm the global economy.

The U.S. companies' complaint -- filed with the International Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce against the world's no. 2 economy -- has drawn scepticism from within the industry, as many fear a trade war could disrupt growth.

Many executives from the United States and Europe have complained privately for years about China's impact on solar markets, but most have also said the business had become so globalised that penalising one country would not help companies that are struggling to survive.

Body?s molecular sensors may trigger autoimmune disease

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? Bruce Beutler, MD, a co-recipient of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Medicine, has coauthored an article describing a novel molecular mechanism that can cause the body to attack itself and trigger an autoimmune disease. The article is published online ahead of print in the Journal of Interferon & Cytokine Research, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

In the article, entitled "Intracellular Nucleic Acid Sensors and Autoimmunity," Argyrios Theofilopoulos, Dwight Kono, Bruce Beutler, and Roberto Baccala, The Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, California), review the scientific evidence that supports the role of molecular sensors located inside cells in the initiation not only of protective and inflammatory immune responses, but also in an autoimmune response. These sensors recognize nucleic acid signatures that may be shared by foreign pathogens and the body's own DNA and RNA.

Dr. Beutler is one of three recipients awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He shares half of the prize with Jules Hoffman, PhD for their discoveries related to how the body's immune system fights disease through the activation of an innate immune response. The third recipient, Ralph Steinman, MD, who died before the Nobel Prizes were announced, previously published an article in AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses. Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. congratulates the three winners for the work and contributions to medicine for which they are being recognized.

The Journal of Interferon & Cytokine Research, led by Co-Editors-in-Chief Ganes C. Sen, PhD, Chairman, Department of Molecular Genetics, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Thomas A. Hamilton, PhD, Chairman, Department of Immunology, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, is an authoritative peer-reviewed journal published monthly in print and online that covers all aspects of interferons and cytokines from basic science to clinical applications. Journal of Interferon & Cytokine Research is the Official Journal of the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research. Bank race for capital to see pay, dividends cut (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Europe's banks were told to cut dividends and bonuses to help them find 106 billion euros ($146 billion) to shore up their capital, and agreed to halve the value of their Greek government debt, sending their shares sharply higher.

After tense talks that ran to the early hours of Thursday, the agreement by private sector investors to take a 103-billion euro hit on their Greek bonds marked a breakthrough for EU leaders trying to halt a eurozone debt crisis from spreading.

"It's short on detail but it's progress," said Simon Maughan, head of trading for Europe at MF Global.

"There's a fairly defined timeline to deal with this. The banks have to raise all of the money by the end of June, so they've got to get on with it," he added.

Bank shares jumped on relief that the deadlock had been broken. By 0720 GMT the STOXX European bank index was up 4.4 percent.

"Agreement has emerged which should give markets reassurance that politicians are finally mindful of the urgency of putting sufficient measures together to prevent further contagion of the credit crisis into core European," said Vivek Raja, analyst at Oriel Securities.

Banks in Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Greece and elsewhere were told they needed to recapitalize to be able to better withstand eurozone sovereign bond losses and an economic downturn.

The amount needed was in line with expectations, though Spanish banks need more than many analysts' forecast, at 26 billion euros.

Seventy banks were tested, but the European Banking Authority (EBA) did not break down how much each lender needs, although some announced details.

Spain's BBVA (BBVA.MC) said it needs 7.1 billion euros. Santander (SAN.MC) declined to say how much it needs, but it could be a similar amount to BBVA, analysts said.

France's BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) requires 2.1 billion euros, Societe Generale needs 3.3 billion and BPCE, the mutual that owns Natixis (CNAT.PA), is in need of 3.4 billion.

Other major banks expected to need to bolster capital include Italy's UniCredit (CRDI.MI) and Germany's Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), although the latter has said it will be able to meet its shortfall without any state help.

Shares in BNP Paribas, SocGen and Deutsche Bank rallied over 7 percent due to their modest capital needs, while Credit Agricole (CAGR.PA) jumped 10 percent as it did not need funds.

Capital raising by the banks is expected to be limited. Of the sum needed, 30 billion euros is already being provided to Greek banks under an aid plan.

Portugal's banks need 7.8 billion euros, and that country is also already receiving aid to help its banks. Belgium's Dexia If banks at risk of a capital shortfall cut dividends this year and next it could save about 32 billion euros, analysts at Credit Suisse estimated earlier this week.

Asset sales and debt liability management plans will provide further cash. Some deleveraging -- as long as it is not what the European Banking Authority deemed "excessive" -- will lift capital ratios further.

That could see banks needing to raise less than 30 billion euros from investors. With European bank shares trading at an average 0.6 times book value, any capital raising would be painfully dilutive for investors.

This must happen: Matt Mitrione and Urijah Faber want to race

Matt Mitrione is an insanely talented athlete. He played in the NFL, and then made a seamless transition into MMA. Going into his bout this weekend with Cheick Kongo, he is undefeated, and every one of his bouts have been in the UFC. But is he athletic enough to beat a bantamweight in a foot race?

When trying to figure out what position in sports is the most athletic, Mitrione tweeted that he would challenge every UFC belt holder to a forty-yard dash, with nothing but pride on the line. Urijah Faber, the one-time UFC featherweight champ, jumped in and challenged every UFC heavyweight to a timed mile. Mitrione said he would take the challenge.

This must happen: Matt Mitrione and Urijah Faber want to race

Oh, please can this happen? Between the trash talk and the idea of Mitrione and Faber competing in anything, this is about as fun as it gets. Is there anyone who wouldn't want to see a heavyweight and a bantamweight in a foot race? If you raised your hand, you clearly don't like fun.

92% Take Shelter

All Critics (90) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (83) | Rotten (7)

A work of hushed and persuasive emotional veracity.

The movies have long been mad about the onset of madness.

The chilling genius of "Take Shelter'' isn't that the threat is never specified but that it doesn't need to be.

A movie for this moment in time, this moment in our lives.

The movie makes you uncomfortable, but in a good way. Nichols has turned the current moment of American unease into a powerful metaphor.

The story of a man afflicted with fearful visions, Take Shelter is a film that's hitting the right apocalyptic trumpet call at the right time.

Take Shelter is paced slowly and deliberately, which is necessary to make believable whatever is tormenting Curtis.

Those who've never understood [anxiety] could do to see Take Shelter as a total immersion virtual reality experience.

With that frowning face - including a right eye that looks sleepy and a left one that looks crazed - Michael Shannon could play Jekyll and Hyde at the same exact time.

Michael Shannon gives his best onscreen performance ever... and creates what might well be the finest male character of 2011.

While Take Shelter is a marvellously composed film, it is also one that holds you at a distance

Out of his 'Tree of Life'

It's creepy and enigmatic, but there's an odd sense of enlightenment as well, making the effort valuable, even if Nichols gets lost in his own material at times.

An engrossing, quietly unnerving film that's one of the year's best...with an astonishing performance by Michael Shannon.

It's so stunningly effective at establishing a sense of dread that it's almost impossible to recommend it without reservations.

The film has the form of a little domestic drama, but it's intense enough to, perhaps, cause you to start watching the skies yourself.

Is Curtis a prophet or is he just crazy? The script, by tyro director Jeff Nichols, does a good job keeping you guessing and still surprises you in the end.

Shannon's talent can be hard to control - it can burst the containment of his character and destabilize a movie - but in "Take Shelter" it is expertly deployed by writer-director Jeff Nichols.

Relentlessly sinister, filled with an eerily ambiguous sense of unease.

Shannon reteams with Shotgun Stories writer-director Nichols for another exploration of one man's wobbling mental state. But this time the story is much more introspective, and watching it is thoroughly unnerving.

A dread-inducing and sometimes downright creepy exercise in Hitchcockian paranoia.

A compelling character-driven piece that offers a beguiling, unsettling inside view of a troubled mind.

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone? [Video]

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone?Dear Lifehacker,
Rooting my Android phone went well, but I've tried to flash a custom ROM and now I think I've bricked my phone. Is there anything I can do?

Sincerely,
Brickdroid

Image remixed from an original by Fe Ilya.

Dear Brickdroid,

First of all, lets get something straight. Most people use the term "bricked" improperly. A bricked phone means one thing: your phone won't turn on in any way, shape or form, and there's nothing you can do to fix it. It is, for all intents and purposes, as useful as a brick. A phone stuck in a boot loop is not bricked, nor is a phone that boots straight into recovery mode. These are things you can usually fix, and they're a lot more common than a truly bricked phone. If your phone is actually bricked, you won't be able to fix it yourself (but there are things you can do?see the end of this article). For those other problems, you have a few options.

If Your Phone Keeps Rebooting: Wipe Your Data and Cache

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone? If you've flashed a ROM and your phone won't boot into the home screen, it's probably because you forgot to wipe your data and/or cache. It's trying to boot into the ROM, but some leftover data from your last ROM is causing it to error out, and it'll reboot itself over and over again. If your phone's eating a bit bowl of boot loops, your first course of action should be to wipe its data and cache, which you can do from recovery mode. This method assumes you're using ClockworkMod Recovery, like the majority of Android users, but if your particular phone uses a different third-party recovery (like AmonRA), you should still be able to find these options in the interface. They might just be in a different place. To wipe your data and cache:

  1. Power down your phone. Turn it back on and boot into Recovery mode. This is a bit different for every phone, so you'll have to Google how to do it for your specific model. Usually it involves holding down another button, like Volume Down, as you turn your phone on. HTC phones will have to then select "Recovery" from a menu, while other phones will boot directly into ClockworkMod. You'll know you're in ClockworkMod by the words "ClockworkMod Recovery" at the top of the screen.
  2. Use your volume keys to navigate the menus, and your power button to select menu items. Scroll down to Advanced, and choose "Wipe Dalvik Cache". When that's finished, go back to the main screen and choose "Wipe Cache Partition". Lastly, head to "Wipe Data/Factory Reset". This will delete all your settings and apps, but you should still be using the correct ROM.
  3. Reboot your phone.

With any luck, it should boot right into your ROM. If that didn't work, try the below method with the same ROM (or with a different ROM) and see if you get different results.

If Your Phone Boots Straight Into Recovery: Flash a New ROM

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone? If, when you boot up your phone, it goes straight into ClockworkMod, then there's likely an issue with the ROM you flashed. Note that some ROMs boot into recovery mode automatically after flashing, so reboot your phone once from recovery mode to make sure you're having a problem. HTC users: if you boot up your phone, it might go straight into the bootloader?check to see whether you can choose "Recovery" from the list before continuing to the next step. HTC phones usually don't boot straight into recovery.

In this case, you'll want to reflash the ROM from scratch. Try again with the ROM that messed up your phone, if you so choose, but if that doesn't work, try an entirely different ROM. The best way to do this is to download a ROM from somewhere on the net and putting it on your SD card. You'll need to take the SD card out of your phone, and you'll need an SD card reader that you can plug into your computer. Here's how it works:

  1. Plug the SD card into your computer. Drag the ROM's ZIP file to your SD card, and wait for it to copy.
  2. When it's done copying, eject the SD card and put it back in your phone. Reboot into Recovery mode.
  3. Use your volume keys to navigate the menus, and your power button to select menu items. Scroll down to "Install ZIP From SD Card" and navigate to the ZIP file you just copied over. Give it time to flash the ROM.
  4. When it's done, reboot your phone.

Hopefully, your phone should successfully boot into the new ROM. From there, you can probably assume that the previous ROM that messed up your phone isn't going to work, and you'll have to find another ROM for now?or find another copy of that ROM that isn't corrupted. Remember to make backups of your working ROMs so you don't lose all your data!

If Your Phone Boots Straight Into its Bootloader: Restore From a Stock ROM

If you're really having trouble, one of the most surefire ways to get your phone working again is to restore from the original ROM your phone came with?unrooted, stock, stable goodness. Each manufacturer and phone has a different method for doing this, and we can't go into too much detail here, but we can steer you in the right direction.

Note that this will unroot your phone, and return it to exactly how it was when you bought it from the store. You'll lose all your apps, settings, ClockworkMod recovery, you'll get over-the-air updates again, and you'll even have to re-activate your phone if you're on a CDMA provider like Verizon or Sprint.

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone? For Motorola Phones: If you have a Motorola phone, you'll need to use RSD Lite, the program that Motorola and its partnered carriers use to restore almost-bricked phones. We've actually run through how to use RSD Lite before, so check out step one of our original rooting guide to restore your phone to its original factory ROM. RSD Lite isn't exactly an official program open to the public, so you'll have to Google around to find a version that works for you. You'll also need an SBF file for your device, which is the original stock ROM that RSD Lite will flash to your phone. Google for this as well. RSD Lite only runs on Windows, so if you're a Mac or Linux user, you'll need a Windows partition or a friend with a Windows machine to help you out.

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone? For HTC Phones: HTC phones can flash stock ROMs, known as RUUs, right from the phone's bootloader. You'll need to Google around for your device's specific RUU file, but once you download it, save the ZIP file to your SD card, and rename it (to something like PG05IMG.zip?the download page for the RUU file should specify which filename is required), booting up your phone should automatically flash the stock ROM from HBOOT, HTC's bootloader. Check out the video at the left to see an example of this on the HTC Thunderbolt.

How Do I Fix My Bricked Android Phone? For Samsung Phones: If you're using a Samsung Galaxy phone, you can use a tool called Odin to reflash an OPS file, which is a stock ROM that will return your phone to factory settings. You'll need a Windows machine and a copy of Odin, which you can find by Googling around the net (as its not an official tool). Check out the video to the left to see an example of Odin, and check out The Unlockr's guide to using Odin to familiarize yourself. You may need to Google around for your specific device's OPS file and instructions.

If You Get Errors with Any of The Above Methods: Reformat Your SD Card and Don't Give Up

This is less likely, but it's a problem I and a few others have run into on occasion: sometimes your SD card just gets corrupted, which makes the above methods useless (since they rely on your SD card to work). Take your SD card out of your phone, put it into your computer using an SD card reader, and format it. It's very important that you format it through an SD card reader directly and not by plugging in your phone in USB mode?I learned this the hard way. Format it as FAT32 and try the above methods again.

Other errors, like during the ROM flashing process, might give you a hint as to what's wrong. Try heading to the XDA Developers forums and asking for help, as your phone could have one of a million specific problems we can't address here today. Remember, if your phone turns on, there's still a good chance you can recover from whatever error you're experiencing, so don't give up just yet!

If Your Phone Is Truly Bricked: Take It Into the Store and Play Dumb

If your phone is actually bricked?that is, it won't turn on at all, no matter how hard you try?it's time to give up and move on. The first thing you can do in this situation is try to take it back to your carrier's store and play dumb?just say something like "I don't know what happened, but my phone won't turn on anymore" (don't tell them you rooted it, obviously). Most carriers don't have time to deal with such issues and they'll just give you a new phone. Sure, it's a tad evil, but it should work most of the time.

If they're wise to your act, though, you can try another store or just sell your bricked phone for a few bucks on Craigslist. Sadly, if no one will replace your phone, you'll have to buy an entirely new one. Such are the dangers of rooting, but don't be discouraged! Bricking your phone is pretty rare, so I wouldn't worry about it being a common occurrence. As always, though, when you void your warranty, only do so if you're ready to replace that device completely, since you never know what can happen.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker

Exclusive: National Security Agency helps banks battle hackers (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The National Security Agency, a secretive arm of the U.S. military, has begun providing Wall Street banks with intelligence on foreign hackers, a sign of growing U.S. fears of financial sabotage.

The assistance from the agency that conducts electronic spying overseas is part of an effort by American banks and other financial firms to get help from the U.S. military and private defense contractors to fend off cyber attacks, according to interviews with U.S. officials, security experts and defense industry executives.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has also warned banks of particular threats amid concerns that hackers could potentially exploit security vulnerabilities to wreak havoc across global markets and cause economic mayhem.

While government and private sector security sources are reluctant to discuss specific lines of investigations, they paint worst-case scenarios of hackers ensconcing themselves inside a bank's network to disable trading systems for stocks, bonds and currencies, trigger flash crashes, initiate large transfers of funds or turn off all ATM machines.

It is unclear if hackers have ever been close to producing anything as dire, but the FBI says it has already helped banks avert several major cyber attacks by helping identify network vulnerabilities.

NSA Director Keith Alexander, who runs the U.S. military's cyber operations, told Reuters the agency is currently talking to financial firms about sharing electronic information on malicious software, possibly by expanding a pilot program through which it offers similar data to the defense industry. He did not provide further details on his agency's collaboration with banks.

Alexander said industry and government were making progress in protecting computer networks, but "tremendous vulnerabilities" remained. The four-star Army general noted companies that have suffered damage from hackers, such as Google Inc, Lockheed Martin Corp and Nasdaq OMX Group, had among the best security systems in the world.

"If they're getting exploited, what about the rest? We have to change that paradigm," Alexander said.

NSA, which has long been charged with protecting classified government networks from attack, is already working with Nasdaq to beef up its defenses after hackers infiltrated its computer systems last year and installed malicious software that allowed them to spy on the directors of publicly held companies. A Nasdaq spokesman confirmed the investigation into the attack continues, but declined to give further details.

OFFICIALS WORRIED

Hackers have targeted Wall Street investment banks for more than a decade, but recent attacks have been more sophisticated, coordinated and deliberate.

That makes security experts suspect the hackers were backed by countries such as China, and fueled concerns that cyber terrorists might someday use malware to wipe out crucial data and cripple networks across the financial sector.

China has repeatedly said it does not condone hacking, but experts say the evidence continues to mount against Beijing. In June, Google blamed China for an attempt to steal the passwords of hundreds of email account holders, the second major breach the Internet giant has blamed on the Chinese.

Earlier this year, security firm McAfee said hackers working in China broke into the computer systems of five global oil and gas companies to steal bidding plans and other critical proprietary information.

"We know adversaries have full unfettered access to certain networks," Shawn Henry, executive assistant director of the FBI, said without identifying the adversaries.

"Once there, they have the ability to destroy data," he said in an interview. "We see that as a credible threat to all sectors, but specifically the financial services sector."

The FBI has helped banks avert several potential attacks by alerting them to vulnerabilities in their computer networks, and by flagging possible hackers before they struck, he said.

Security experts interviewed by Reuters declined to identify any banks that may have data compromised, citing promises of confidentiality to clients, colleagues and employers that they would not to discuss the matter publicly.

Representatives of Wall Street's biggest banks including Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co either declined to discuss security issues or were not available to comment.

TREASURE TROVE OF DATA

Former Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn said cyber attacks could prove particularly devastating for financial institutions given the critical importance of the data stored on their networks and the need to maintain investor confidence in their security.

"You can't do transactions if you don't have reliable data," Lynn, who spearheaded the Pentagon's national cyber strategy released this summer, said in an interview.

He said more than 100 countries already have some hacking capabilities, and such tools could soon be available to rogue groups.

"You ultimately have to worry about terrorist groups gaining those capabilities, either by developing them themselves or just buying them on the open market," said Lynn, who retired earlier this month.

The NSA's work with Wall Street marks a milestone in the agency's efforts to make its cyber intelligence available more broadly to the private sector. For years, the spy agency kept such a low profile that some joked that its name stood for "No Such Agency" or "Never Say Anything."

Greater cooperation with industry became possible after a deal reached a year ago between the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security, allowing NSA to provide cyber expertise to other government agencies and certain private companies.

Several people familiar with the NSA's assistance to Wall Street said the agency only gets involved when banks specifically ask for its help, so as not to violate laws that restrict its ability to operate within U.S. borders. These institutions get warnings about potential attacks and can ask questions on specific problems.

The NSA and big arms makers have a treasure trove of data on hacking, including intelligence on planned attacks and libraries of malicious software code used by foreign-government supported hackers that are not available elsewhere.

Such intelligence can be "gold" to a bank's security staff, said Shane Sims, a director in the forensics practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"You can cash it in," said Sims, who is investigating attacks on several banks believed to be orchestrated by foreign governments. "It just allows you to turn your environment into an early warning system so you can intercede and take action before information goes out the door."

Banks need help from the NSA because they cannot keep up with increasingly sophisticated attacks just by using technology from traditional software security firms, experts say.

About eight out of ten Wall Street firms have been infiltrated by foreign-government backed hackers, according to Tom Reilly, who helps investment banks fight hackers in his role as the head of Hewlett-Packard Co's security business.

Hemanshu Nigam, a former federal prosecutor and cyber security expert, said enemy states could launch a cyber assault when their targets were particularly vulnerable. This could be during a major crisis, such as the financial crisis in 2008, the euro zone crisis now, or at the time of a key event such as the U.S. loss of its triple-A credit rating this summer.

Investors are already worried about how quickly markets can meltdown, as trading is almost completely electronic and reliant on hair-trigger software. The Dow Jones industrial average crashed nearly 700 points in about five minutes on May 6, 2010, an unprecedented plunge that regulators said was exacerbated by algorithmic trading, panic and vacuums of liquidity.

"What you're seeing is something that can cause a global tidal wave," said the cybersecurity expert Nigam, who had worked for News Corp and Microsoft Corp.

BANKS ALSO CONSULTING DEFENSE FIRMS

The NSA first started to worry about security of financial institutions about two years ago, and has held meetings with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and banks to address those concerns, according to Jim Lewis, a cyber expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank.

The New York Fed declined comment.

Lewis pointed the finger at China as a consistent threat. "Business espionage is a normal practice for Chinese businesses and for (government) agencies," he said.

U.S. financial institutions have also sought assistance from private defense contractors that help the U.S. government build cyber weapons and tools for defending military networks.

Companies such as Lockheed, General Dynamics Corp, Boeing Co, Northrop Grumman Corp and Raytheon Co are now competing with traditional security vendors to serve corporate America, including banks.

Defense industry executives say big Wall Street firms are asking arms makers for help in locking down critical data, including the algorithms used for trading shares, currencies and commodities.

"Other sectors are becoming increasingly concerned about such attacks and want to learn more about how we protect our data," said one defense industry executive, whose company has already worked with power companies and is now negotiating agreements with several major financial firms.

Earlier this year, the hacking of EMC Corp's RSA security division underscored the growing sophistication of hackers. RSA provides SecurID keys used by companies all over the world.

The hackers, likely backed by a foreign government, used data from the RSA breach, coupled with personal identifying information gleaned from other attacks, to break into Lockheed's computer networks.

Erin Nealy Cox, a former U.S. federal computer crimes prosecutor, said she tells banks that it's only a matter of time before their systems are breached.

"Our advice to our clients is -- it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," said Nealy Cox, managing director at Stroz Friedberg LLC. "We don't want to give anybody a false sense of security." Marathon runners who drink too much water are at risk of a deadly condition
Every couple of miles, the 30,000 or so runners competing in the 36th Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday will pass stations stocked with water and sports drinks. Most, hopefully, won?t stop unless thirsty. Some, however, following outdated advice, will drink according to a preset schedule ? even downing all they can hold ? increasing their risk, doctors say, of a potentially fatal medical condition.

Ex-ad exec with ties to 'Gayle King' is convicted (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A former advertising executive who once had ties to the "Gayle King Show" was convicted Tuesday of kidnapping his ex-wife, holding her hostage for nearly 12 hours and burning down the Connecticut home they used to share.

The jury in Hartford Superior Court convicted 62-year-old Richard Shenkman of all charges. His ex-wife testified that Shenkman fired a handgun near her head, prepared a noose and claimed to have rigged the house with explosives as police surrounded it.

The standoff ended when Shenkman came out of the burning home and pointed a handgun at his head. Police subdued him and took him into custody. Shenkman's lawyer mounted an insanity defense, but the prosecutor argued that Shenkman was just acting mentally ill to avoid prison.

Shenkman, who didn't testify, has been detained since his arrest. He is the brother of Mark Shenkman, founder and president of one of the nation's largest money management firms, Shenkman Capital Management. His former advertising firm, Primedia, once produced the former "Gayle King Show," starring Oprah Winfrey's best friend.

Shenkman faces up to 90 years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 4.

In 2009, police said Shenkman kidnapped his ex-wife, attorney Nancy Tyler, from a downtown Hartford parking garage at gunpoint and forced her to drive about nine miles to the South Windsor home they once shared.

Authorities said Shenkman and Tyler were due in court for a divorce-related hearing later that morning, and he was supposed to turn over the house to her or face jail time for contempt of court.

Tyler testified at the trial about her harrowing ordeal, saying Shenkman fired a handgun twice near her head, prepared a noose for her and claimed to have rigged the house with explosives as swarms of police surrounded the home. Tyler had called a friend on her cell phone in concern over seeing Shenkman's minivan near her Hartford office and urged her to call police just before she was kidnapped.

Tyler said that Shenkman handcuffed her to an eyebolt in a basement wall at one point, and that she managed to unscrew the bolt and run outside when Shenkman went upstairs to check on police activity.

Shenkman talked on the phone to dispatchers and police officers several times during the crisis. The jury listened to the recorded conversations, in which Shenkman sometimes sounded frantic, screamed and several times counted down the seconds to his threatened killing of Tyler.

Police testified that the nearly 15-hour standoff ended when Shenkman came out of the burning home and pointed a handgun at his head. Minutes later, officers shot Shenkman with rubber bullets and used a stun gun on him twice before subduing him and taking him into custody.

Shenkman and Tyler married in 1993 and she filed for divorce in 2006. A judge approved the divorce in 2008, but court proceedings continued as Shenkman appealed.

His lawyer, Hugh Keefe, called to the witness stand two prominent psychiatrists who evaluated Shenkman after the standoff and agreed that he was psychotic. Keefe also disputed the arson charge, suggesting that police caused the fire when they fired gas canisters into the house.

But prosecutor Vicki Melchiorre told the jury that Shenkman was just acting mentally ill to avoid prison and insisted he started the fire. She said Shenkman kidnapped Tyler and burned down the uninsured home because he was upset she filed for divorce and he didn't want her to have the house.

"Fear of going to jail is not psychotic," Melchiorre said, "especially when you're a 60-year-old, short, out-of-shape guy with an annoying disposition. It's not something that would make him popular in jail."

Tyler also testified that Shenkman had learned before the kidnapping that he could get his way in many situations if he acted crazy.

Shenkman also awaits trial on another arson charge connected to the burning of his and Tyler's beachfront home in East Lyme in 2007, just hours before he was to hand it over to her as part of the divorce.
