MLK memorial: Disputed quote removed (+video)

MLK memorial disputed inscription: "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness." The words are not an exact quote but a paraphrase from a Martin Luther King speech. Work to remove the disputed inscription from the MLK memorial began this past week.

By Brett Zongker,?Associated Press / August 3, 2013

A Chinese sculptor has removed a disputed inscription from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial statue that he designed on the National Mall and said Thursday that he is working on a new finish for the side of the artwork.

Plans call for sculptor Lei Yixin to carve grooves over the former words to match existing horizontal "striation" marks in the memorial. Lei said he is working to deepen all the memorial's grooves so that they will match.

The disputed inscription was a paraphrase from King's "Drum Major" speech. It read, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

Critics, including the poet Maya Angelou, argued that the quotation was taken out of context when it was paraphrased and shortened. Angelou said it made King sound arrogant.

The actual quote from a 1968 speech says: "Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

Lei said the corrective work was going well and is on track to finish before commemorations of the 50th anniversary of King's "I Have A Dream" speech at the March on Washington on Aug. 28.

"The difficulty is the new striations ? so they won't damage the integrity of the statue itself," Lei said through an interpreter.

Lei said there was not a high probability, though, of the new carvings causing any cracks.

"It's not a big problem because the striations are designed to appear on the sides," he said. "If it has some cracks, we could deal with them."

Lei said he heard about King when he was growing up in China. He called King a "world-class hero" who was well-known in China and said it was an honor to create the statue.

"Right now, as we see, the statue looks really good," he said through his son, who served as an interpreter. "He thinks Americans would not regret picking him as the sculptor."

More than 5.2 million people visited the memorial last year, according to the National Park Service.

National Mall Superintendent Robert Vogel said the work should be completed a few days before commemorations of the March on Washington anniversary between Aug. 24 and Aug. 28.

"The response to the memorial has been overwhelmingly positive" since it was completed, Vogel said. "People have come and wept at the base of the statue. I think people have seen it as a great work of art and a great addition to the National Mall."

The changes will cost between $700,000 and $800,000, Vogel said. The work will be paid for from funds raised to build the memorial that were transferred to the National Park Foundation for repairs and maintenance.

No taxpayer dollars will be used to make the repairs, Vogel said.

The removal of an inscription or piece of a memorial is rare in Washington, but debate and controversy often accompanies every memorial construction project.

This situation was unusual in that the shortened version of the inscription was not formally approved by two panels that oversee architecture and design in the nation's capital, Vogel said. Angelou also served on a panel of historians who recommended this memorial's inscriptions.

Harry Johnson, who led the group that built the memorial, said he was pleased everyone had agreed on a solution.

"There's controversy every time you build a memorial," he said. "I can't explain it. All I can say is we're here to take care of it and make sure it's done correctly."

Powerball jackpot at $400M after no weekend winner

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? No one hit the Powerball jackpot on Saturday, so the money will roll over: A cool $400 million for the next drawing.

While hefty, the prize for Wednesday's drawing is still well below the record $590.5 million jackpot won in May by an 84-year-old Florida woman.

The winning numbers Saturday were 21, 24, 36, 42 and 45; the Powerball was 15.

The odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 175.2 million.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Twitter hostilities between players from Oakland A's, Texas Rangers ends peacefully

OAKLAND ? The social media hostility on Twitter between Rangers pitcher Matt Garza and A's second baseman Eric Sogard and his wife, Kaycee, is over, apparently with no lasting damage.

Garza was unhappy that Sogard bunted home a run against him in the seventh inning Saturday. The A's were up 3-2 at the time, but Garza hadn't allowed a run since the first inning, and the A's decided to exploit the fact that Garza isn't particularly good at fielding his position.

He yelled at Sogard at the time, and after the game, a 4-2 A's win, Garza responded to Kaycee Sogard's tweets about Eric's successful bunt with a series misogynistic of tweets that talked about baseball being ``a man's game,'' suggesting that Kaycee Sogard ``keep your trap shut,'' and telling Eric Sogard ``to keep your wife out of it.''

On Sunday, Garza issued an apology on his twitter feed and apologized when talking to the media.

The Sogards were with A's teammates and their spouses at an A's charity bowling event Saturday night while the altercation took place. Sogard said Sunday morning he had a couple of teammates mention something to him during the bowling, but he didn't get the full picture until he and Kaycee went home.

``We got home last night and talked about it and we thought it basically it was pretty funny,'' he said. ``It was like `Can you believe this is happening?' But it did happen.''

Garza's media apology and his twitter apology were basically the same.

``All I want to say is I let my competitive spirit cross outside the lines, and that shouldn't happen,'' Garza said. ``I let my passion, my fire, carry over, and that's not the way this game should be played. For that, I apologize to the Sogards for anything that was said through my Twitter. Regret what happened and looking forward to a great game today.''

Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine, who called Garza's twitter outburst ``totally inappropriate,'' called the A's to personally apologize. And he and several members of the Texas front office talked with Garza, who was recently acquired from the Cubs to beef up the Rangers' starting rotation.

``We had a conversation with him (this morning.),'' Levine said. ``I certainly did, and individually a number of people have had discussions with him. He's been very conciliatory. Those are the type of conversations where you expect to sit down and work out some emotions. He was contrite right from the outset of the conversation.''

One of Levine's suggestions to Garza was that he get off Twitter, and he said Garza ``seemed to go along with it.''

For their part the A's aren't asking any of their players to tone down their tweets in any way and manager Bob Melvin said he didn't see any long-term impact.

``Will it make the rivalry (more intense?) I don't know,'' Melvin said. ``It's already at a pretty high intensity.''

Rangers manager Ron Washington, a very old school guy, not only isn't on Twitter (Melvin was for a bit in spring training but isn't now), but he said he wasn't exactly sure what Twitter was.

``What's Twitter anyway?'' Washington asked. ``People's opinions?''

The Texas manager said he didn't expect there to be any carryover and that he wouldn't ask his players to abandon Twitter.

China, India See Interests Converge in Upholding Nepal Stability

Traditionally competitors for influence in neighboring Nepal, China and India are now signaling readiness to join forces to pull the Himalayan nation out of its chronic political instability.

The contours of a formal cooperation framework are yet to emerge. But academic and media circles in China and India suggest a growing convergence of interest in preventing instability from spilling across Nepal?s borders. ...

Cars banned as Rome moves to protect Coliseum - World News

Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

Pedestrians swarm around the Coliseum in Rome Saturday after cars were banned from part of the Via dei Fori Imperiali.

By Claudio Lavanga, Correspondent, NBC News

ROME -- The Coliseum in Rome was arguably the most beautiful traffic circle in the world. For decades, thousands of cars and vespas zipped around the ancient amphitheater every day. But from Saturday, all that is history.

Exhaust fumes slowly blackened the amphitheater?s once shiny marble, and experts worried the tremors caused by traffic could threaten the fragile monument.?

Part of Via dei Fori Imperiali -- the spectacular cobblestone avenue that leads to the Coliseum -- was closed to traffic apart from public transport Saturday and turned into the ?most stunningly beautiful boulevard in the world.?

Romans and tourists will finally be able stand in front of the most famous symbol of ancient Rome without fearing they will be run over by impatient motorists -- though some nearby roads are still open.

?Visitors will walk where Julius and Augustus Caesar walked, in the shadows of the Campidoglio Hill and magnificent Coliseum,? Ignazio Marino, the newly elected mayor of Rome, said. ?In this location of truly stunning beauty, once more we witness history in the making.?

In a way, Marino has made history of his own.

The pedestrianization of Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Coliseum has been a talking point for decades, but the idea never took off due to the absence of alternative routes for the 1,200 motorists an hour that used it during peak times.

However, Marino turned his election pledge into reality just seven weeks after he took office in June.

?The project came about and has developed thanks to the participation of the men and women of Rome, as a measure which shall enhance quality of life and kindle a new-found love of the city,? Marino boasts on the official project website.

But not all ?men and women of Rome? think the pedestrianization will ?enhance the quality? of their life.

Hundreds people who live on or around roads that will take the bulk of the diverted traffic oppose the project and blame Marino for throwing them to the lions.

On nearby Via Merulana, an avenue already plagued by heavy traffic, smog and noise pollution, locals shook their heads at the sight of police reducing parking spaces to make room for the expected increase in traffic.

A hundred yards away, city council workers drew an extra lane, turning the already bustling road into a kind of inner-city highway.

Fearful that the fast-moving traffic, lack of parking spaces and the general ensuing chaos would drive clients away, angry shopkeepers and others formed a pressure group to stop, or at least modify, the project.

?This can only end badly for us,? Michele de Angelis, a local newsagent, said. ?With fast-moving traffic, nobody is going to be able to stop by, even to buy a newspaper. And traffic will be so bad soon people will simply decide to avoid the area.?

Despite the residents? fears, Marino plans to press on. He plans to kick out the mobile food carts, illegal vendors and costume-clad wannabe gladiators who turned the amphitheater into a tourist trap.

And next, he dreams of closing down surrounding areas to traffic, including the bustling Piazza Venezia.

Marino also hopes to get money from the European Union to start digging in around the forum to turn it into the ?biggest archeological area in the world.?

He may have been mayor of Rome for only seven weeks, but some see a hint of the emperors of old in his ambition and drive.

Apple Ebook Dealings Violated Antitrust Law

A federal court in New York has found Apple guilty of violating federal antitrust laws, stating that the company ?played a central role in facilitating and executing a conspiracy? to raise ebook prices.

Judge Denise Cote found that Apple conspired with a group of five major trade publishers?Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan, Penguin Group, and Simon & Schuster?to break Amazon?s then-dominant $9.99 pricing model by collectively agreeing to set higher retail prices using an ?agency? pricing model in which the publisher, rather than the retailer, sets the retail price.

The lawsuit dates from late 2009 when Apple was about to introduce the iPad and its iBookstore e-reader app. At the time, its major competitor was Amazon and its Kindle e-reader, although other smaller competitors such as Barnes & Noble?s Nook e-reader were also in the marketplace. Amazon had achieved its market dominance by offering discount ebook pricing, with most new release and bestseller ebooks selling for $9.99. While this was often close to or even below the wholesale price Amazon paid to the publishers, Amazon could afford to do this due to its volume of total sales and the profit from the Kindle e-reader.

However, the publishers were frustrated by Amazon?s pricing because it was undercutting their profits from both ebook and physical book sales. According to the judge?s opinion, Apple ?seized the moment and brilliantly played its hand? and began to work with the publishers on a plan that would ?eliminate retail price competition in the e-book market? and raise the price of ebooks above $9.99. The Justice Department and several states attorneys general filed lawsuits claiming that the actions of Apple and the publishers violated state and federal antitrust laws.

In her opinion (which only applied to Apple, as the publishers had previously settled their cases), the judge outlined the growth of the publishers? discontent with Amazon and its $9.99 price point and a number of collaborative efforts that the publishers had already been doing in response. The major technique they used was a process called ?windowing? (also called ?withholding?), which involved delaying ebook access to newly released books and best-sellers. This technique required significant agreement among the publishers and only met with minimal success.

Enter Apple. Against this backdrop, Apple was in the final stages of developing the iPad tablet and sought to actively enter the ebook market. With full knowledge of the publishers? problems with Amazon, Apple requested meetings with the publishers. Describing the meetings and subsequent negotiations as ?an exciting turn of events? for the publishers, the judge outlined the substance of several weeks of meetings culminating with Apple?s proposing to all of the publishers that it would accept an agency pricing model with standard retail price points ranging from $12.99 to $19.99 and a 30% profit margin, provided that the publishers adopt the agency model ?for all their e-tailers,? with Amazon being the main e-tailer.?

The agreement also provided a ?Most Favored Nation? clause, which guaranteed that Apple?s iBookstore would sell its ebooks for the ?lowest retail price available.? This guarantee would ensure that Apple?s $12.99 to $19.99 price points would be the de facto new lowest retail price.

Ultimately, five of the largest trade publishers signed agreements (Random House initially did not, although it did several months later). The judge noted that this cooperative activity, instigated by Apple, would soon force Amazon to similarly adopt the agency model for the retail pricing of its ebooks. As a result, the release of the iPad and iBookstore was accompanied by nearly instantaneous increases in the price of ebooks from all retailers, Amazon included.

The judge had little difficulty finding that the actions of both Apple and the publishers violated federal antitrust law. Antitrust law prohibits a ?contract, combination ... or conspiracy, in restraint of trade.? (Title 15, Section 1 of the U.S. Code). In order to prove that an antitrust violation occurred, the evidence must establish that there has been a ?concerted action between at least two legally distinct economic entities? that demonstrates a ?unity of purpose, common design or understanding, or meeting of the minds? that results in an unreasonable restraint of trade.

But not all concerted actions violate antitrust law. In order to be illegal, it must be shown to be ?in fact unreasonable and anti-competitive? or that the action resulted in an ?actual adverse effect on competition as a whole? and that there was no offsetting ?pro-competitive? aspect to the arrangement.

However, the judge determined that there was compelling evidence that Apple and the publishers conspired to ?eliminate retail price competition and raise e-book prices.? The judge determined that the conspiracy began with the publishers and their concerted efforts to break Amazon?s $9.99 price point. However, she also found that Apple ?not only willingly joined the conspiracy? to break the $9.99 price, ?but also forcefully facilitated it.??

The judge focused on Apple?s insistence on the ?Most Favored Nation? provision in the agreements, which Apple understood and intended would be the hammer that would force Amazon to abandon the $9.99 price point and adopt the agency model. Apple?s participation in the conspiracy was essential to its success. The judge also looked for a ?pro-competitive? aspect to the arrangement but was unable to find any. Apple argued that its launch of the iPad and iBookstore demonstrated new competition in the marketplace. However, the judge noted that neither of those events occurred due to the Apple conspiracy, but they were actually actions that were independent of the conspiracy.

The judge also rejected Apple?s claims that its actions were legitimate business actions, that it was the publishers and not Apple that raised prices, and that but for the price increase, the publishers would have continued or expanded their practice of windowing new releases. Each of these claims did not legitimize Apple?s involvement in the conspiracy, according to the judge.? The court also rejected Apple?s argument that Amazon had engaged in similar actions, even if that was true. By noting that Amazon?s actions served to reduce rather than increase prices, the court seemed to suggest that it was not true; it did not excuse Apple?s actions.

Already, several commentators have weighed in on the impact of the decision. Ebook sales dropped considerably after the price increase, and even the judge took note of this. Writing for Slate, commentator Farhad Manjoo declared Apple?s ebook actions, the ?Stupidest Thing Apple Ever Did,? suggesting that the collusion attempt was ?shameful? and a ?failure? and ultimately contributed to Amazon?s continuing dominance of the ebook market. The New York Times suggested that the ruling could inhibit future negotiations between technology and media companies to avoid the risk of being found to be in collusion.

But the main problem seems to be that both Apple and the publishers are trying to protect a business model that may no longer exist. Among the publishers? fears that led to the conspiracy was that Amazon could use its market power to exclude publishers entirely and deal directly with authors and agents. This may be already happening. The Amazon/Apple battle also underscores the continuing problem of multiple ebook platforms. As with the VHS/Betamax and Blu-ray/HD-DVD battles of years past, the inability of consumers to effectively rely on a single platform is an inhibiting factor in the advancement of the market, in this case, the ebook market.? The Apple decision does not change that. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??

Apple has vowed to appeal the decision. In addition, further court proceedings are expected to determine any damages that Apple is to pay and what relief the court will order.

(AP) ? The United States issued an extraordinary global travel warning to Americans Friday about the threat of an al-Qaida attack and closed down 21 embassies and consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend.

The alert was the first of its kind since an announcement preceding the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This one comes with the scars still fresh from last year's deadly Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and with the Obama administration and Congress determined to prevent any similar breach of an American Embassy or consulate.

"There is a significant threat stream and we're reacting to it," said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He told ABC News in an interview to be aired Sunday that the threat was "more specific" than previous ones and the "intent is to attack Western, not just U.S. interests."

The State Department warning urged American travelers to take extra precautions overseas, citing potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists and noting that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats. It suggested travelers sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit.

The statement said that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests. The alert expires on Aug. 31.

The State Department said the potential for terrorism was particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian Peninsula.

U.S. officials pointed specifically to Yemen, the home of al-Qaida's most dangerous offshoot and the network blamed for several notable terrorist plots on the United States, from the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit to the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

"Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," a department statement said.

The alert was posted a day after the U.S. announced it would shut many diplomatic facilities Sunday. Spokeswoman Marie Harf said the department acted out of an "abundance of caution" and that some missions may stay closed for longer than a day. Sunday is a business day in Muslim countries, and the diplomatic offices affected stretch from Mauritania in northwest Africa to Afghanistan.

"I don't know if I can say there was a specific threat," said Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, the House Foreign Affairs Committee's top Democrat, who was briefed on the State Department's decision. "There is concern over the potentiality of violence."

Although the warning coincided with "Al-Quds Day," the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan when people in Iran and some Arab countries express their solidarity with the Palestinians and their opposition to Israel, U.S. officials played down any connection. They said the threat wasn't directed toward a specific American diplomatic facility.

The concern by American officials over the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is not new, given the terror branch's gains in territory and reach during Yemen's prolonged Arab Spring-related instability.

The group made significant territorial gains last year, capturing towns and cities in the south amid a power struggle in the capital that ended with the resignation of Yemen's longtime leader, Ali Abdullah Saleh. A U.S.-aided counteroffensive by the government has since pushed the militants back.

Yemen's current president, Abdo Rabby Mansour Hadi, met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday, where both leaders cited strong counterterrorism cooperation. Earlier this week, Yemen's military reported a U.S. drone strike killed six alleged al-Qaida militants in the group's southern strongholds.

As recently as June, the group's commander, Qasim al-Rimi, released an Arabic-language video urging attacks on U.S. targets and praising the ethnic Chechen brothers accused of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombings. "Making these bombs has become in everyone's ... reach," he said, according to the English subtitles on the video, reposted by private U.S. intelligence firm the IntelCenter.

"The blinking red intelligence appears to be pointing toward an Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula plot," said Seth Jones, counterterror expert at the Rand Corp., referring to the branch of al-Qaida known as AQAP.

Britain also took action Friday in Yemen, announcing it would close its embassy there on Sunday and Monday as a precaution.

Britain, which closely coordinates on intelligence matters with Washington, stopped short of releasing a similar region-wide alert but added that some embassy staff in Yemen had been withdrawn "due to security concerns." British embassies and consulates elsewhere in the Middle East were to remain open.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, said the embassy threat was linked to al-Qaida and concerned the Middle East and Central Asia.

"In this instance, we can take a step to better protect our personnel and, out of an abundance of caution, we should," Royce said. He declined to say if the National Security Agency's much-debated surveillance program helped reveal the threat.

The New York Times reported Friday night that American officials said the U.S. had intercepted electronic communications among senior operatives of al-Qaida.

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence panel, also supported the department's decision to go public with its concerns.

"The most important thing we have to do is protect American lives," he said, describing the threat as "not the regular chitchat" picked up from would-be militants on the Internet or elsewhere.

The State Department issued another warning a year ago about potential violence connected to the Sept. 11 anniversary. Dozens of American installations were besieged by protests over reports of an anti-Islam video made by an American resident, and in Benghazi, Libya, the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants assaulted a diplomatic post.

The administration no longer says Benghazi was related to the demonstrations. But the attack continues to be a flashpoint of contention with Republicans in Congress who say Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and others in the government misled the country about the nature of the attack after failing to provide adequate diplomatic protection.

Tunisian forces launch air strikes on Islamist militants

By Tarek Amara and Erika Solomon

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisian forces launched air and ground strikes on Islamist militants near the Algerian border on Friday after fierce overnight clashes in the area, which coincided with increased instability and political turmoil in the North African country.

Aircraft bombed caves in the Mount Chaambi area, where the military has been trying to track down Islamist militants since December, witnesses said on Friday.

"A major military operation with the participation of air and ground units began at dawn on Friday," army spokesman Taoufik Rahmouni said, adding that the army had surrounded a "terrorist" group of 15 to 20 militants.

"The army has now imposed a security ring around the area and is searching nearby towns in the region. Until now there are no casualties or arrests (in Mount Chaambi)," he said.

The operation was launched in the same area where militants ambushed and killed eight soldiers on Monday in one of the deadliest attacks on Tunisian security forces in decades. The gunmen slit the throats of some of their victims.

Tunisia's Islamist-led government is grappling with rising instability and a mounting protest movement organized by the secular opposition that is demanding its resignation. Rival rallies to support the ruling coalition have also been growing.

Prime Minister Ali Larayedh, who belongs to the Islamist Ennahda party, will discuss the security situation and the political crisis with opposition parties and other groups on Saturday, his office said. He is then expected to address the public.

An Algerian security source said that the militants in Mount Chaambi include Tunisians, Libyans and Algerians.

"They are heavily armed, likely with weapons from Libya," the source said. "We will do our best to support Tunisia but not intervene on its territory."

POLITICAL CRISIS

While the border fighting raged, pro- and anti-government protesters were preparing for a weekend of rival demonstrations. Protests have been mostly peaceful so far.

Tunisia's powerful union federation has called for the government to bow to opposition demands and create a new government within a week of starting talks with its rivals.

But the 600,000-strong Tunisian General Trade Union has endorsed Ennahda's demand that the transitional Constituent Assembly be allowed to finish drafting a new constitution and an election law, although it says the body must speed up its work.

The opposition, angered by the assassination of one of its leaders last week, wants the assembly dissolved.

Ennahda blames Salafi militants for that assassination and a similar one in February, as well as for two improvised bombs that exploded in Tunis in the past week, the first time such blasts in the capital. No one was hurt in the explosions.

In the town of Kasserine, near Mount Chaambi, security forces raided a mosque and arrested 12 Salafis, a witness said.

The porous border area is known for smuggling, which has flourished since Tunisians toppled autocratic President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

The Interior Ministry said on Friday security forces had also arrested a Salafi militant who was preparing explosives in Manzel Bourguiba, a town 50 km (30 miles) north of Tunis.

Local media said the man was captured after blowing off his hand experimenting with explosives.

Another Salafist blew himself as he was trying to build a bomb at his home, the ministry said. The man's wife was wounded in the explosion in the suburb of Manouba, 10 km outside the capital, and was taken to hospital.

Dick Kazmaier, Heisman winner who passed on NFL career, dies at 82

When Dick Kazmaier was given the opportunity to play football for a living, he decided he wanted to make real money instead. Thus the Princeton halfback and the 1951 Heisman Trophy recipient said no to an NFL career and yes to a business career.

Kazmaier chose wisely. He eventually built a successful financial planning and consulting firm with a focus on sports. He died Thursday at age 82 of heart and lung disease in Boston, according to The New York Times.

PHOTOS: Heisman Trophy winners | Notable sports deaths of 2013

Kazmaier's decision not to turn pro was a lot easier in '51 than it would be today. As the Times noted, NFL players made about $5,000 a year at the time. That was OK for seasonal work, but Kazmaier had bigger goals and the means to achieve them.

Besides, he once said (per the Times), "I had achieved everything I could achieve as an individual and as part of a team (at Princeton). I felt there was nowhere to go but down (in the NFL).?

He declined to sign with the Chicago Bears, who had drafted him, and went to Harvard for his master's degree, which he received in 1954. He then served three years as a Naval officer before ultimately moving into sports marketing and consulting. He founded Kazmaier Associates in 1975.

Kazmaier is one of 12 Heisman winners to have never played in an NFL regular season game after leaving college. The others: Jay Berwanger, Larry Kelley, Clint Frank, Nile Kinnick, Doc Blanchard, Pete Dawkins, Ernie Davis, Joe Bellino (played in the AFL), Charlie Ward, Eric Crouch and Jason White.

9 Afghans killed in attack on Indian consulate

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Three suicide attackers killed at least nine civilians, most of them children, in a botched attack Saturday on the Indian consulate in an eastern Afghan city near the border with Pakistan, security officials said.

Police fired on the militants as they approached a checkpoint near the consulate in Jalalabad, prompting one of them to set off their explosives-laden car, said Masum Khan Hashimi, the deputy police chief of Nangarhar province. The blast killed nine bystanders, and wounded another 24 people including a policeman.

All three attackers also died, although it was not clear how many were killed by police fire and how many by the explosion.

In New Delhi, India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin says that all Indian officials in the consulate were safe.

Afghanistan's main insurgent group, the Taliban, denied in a text message that it had carried out the attack. Smaller militant groups based in Pakistan have targeted Indian interests in Afghanistan in the past.

Hashimi said the attack began when three men in a car approached the checkpoint. Two of the men got out of the car wearing vests rigged with explosives and a police guard immediately opened fire on them, Hashimi said. He added that the third man then detonated a large bomb located inside the car.

In 2010, two Kabul guest houses popular among Indians were attacked, killing more than six Indians. India blamed that attack on the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The Indian Embassy was bombed in 2008 and 2009, leaving 75 people dead.

The attack came as the U.S. planned to close its embassies in the Muslim world for the weekend due to an al-Qaida threat.

A Freshman?s Guide To The First Day Of College

(Photo by Ann Hermes/The Christian Science Monitor via Getty Images)

(Photo by Ann Hermes/The Christian Science Monitor via Getty Images)

Coming out of high school and diving right into college two months later is like doing a cannonball into cold lake water after soaking in the hot tub for hours. If you don?t regulate your temperature and prepare yourself, you could potentially send your body into shock for a while. We?ve all been there, so we want to help you prevent that! Check out our guide for college freshman to ensure you don?t look like a lost, cold, shocked puppy on the first day of your college classes.

1. NEVER walk with a map!

You know that game called pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey? Don?t be the donkey. Don?t be the source of the upperclassmen?s laughter. Just don?t do it. If you need to know where you?re going, spend the day before classes exploring the campus and finding your way around. That way, people won?t be around to see you use the map. So let me repeat one last time? Never, EVER walk with a map! ESPECIALLY on the first day of classes. That is a guaranteed way to draw unnecessary attention to yourself and to brand yourself as ?Fresh Meat.?

2. DO NOT wear your college game-day t-shirt!

I?m not telling you to NEVER wear your school colors, or even that college game-day t-shirt. You don?t have to look like you just stepped out of a catalogue, either (please don?t). I?m just telling you not to wear it on the first day of class. Remember, everyone there is a student at the university? you don?t need to blatantly remind them that you belong there, too. Wear something that you?re comfortable wearing, because chances are it?ll probably be hot and humid on the first day anyway.

3. It?s ok to ask for directions!

If you are lost, don?t pull out the map? just ask for directions! No one is going to kick you, stuff you in a locker, push you down to the bricks, or any of that cliche stuff. The worst thing that could happen is you ask a freshman who is just as lost as you are. It won?t necessarily brand you as a ?freshman? if you ask for directions. If you go to a large university, chances are there are upperclassmen who still get themselves turned around with directions. Having a bad sense of directions is a generic trait, not a freshman stamp.

4. Walk with confidence!

Please? PLEASE don?t ?look? lost. I beg of you. Upperclassmen are looking for the lost ones. So to avoid being their target, make it seem like you planned to go there. We?ve all been there. I?ve made plenty of proud strides through bushy botanical garders, I?ve hopped fences with a purpose, I even walked straight through a crowded classroom of 300 students and towards the exit door to mask the fact that I wasn?t in the right place.?If you?re heading straight for a cul-de-sac or something, you better strut towards that dead end with confidence!

5. AVOID the ?deer-in-headlights? glare!

Do me a favor. Look yourself in the mirror, tense your body, and open your eyes wide. Now look from left to right. Remember this look because I NEVER want you to do this EVER again, especially on the first day of class. This is a guaranteed bullseye. You might as well walk with a target on your back and huge Vegas-like neon lights that flash ?FRESHMAN.? I?ll leave it at that.

6. DO NOT eat everything in the dining hall!

Did you sign up for a year-round meal plan? Well let me fill you in on a little secret? that piece of pizza that?s on your plate? It?ll be there the next day, the next month, in fact, chances are that piece of pizza might even be there by the time you graduate. So you don?t need to eat that piece of pizza, that chicken leg, those rolls of sushi, a bowl of cereal, three chocolate chip cookies topped off with an ice cream cone on your first day of class! Pace yourself. We know you?re excited that it?s like an all-you-can-eat-buffet, but that doesn?t mean it?s all you SHOULD eat.

7. DO NOT over-prepared yourself!

Remember this PLEASE! Most professors are obligated to review the syllabus with you before you even crack open a textbook. It?s no different from high school.?You don?t want to be that person in the quiet classroom unzipping the bookbag in dead silence and flipping through your blank notebook pages, or worse! You THUMP that oversized college textbook for that Psychology 101 class on the wooden desk so everyone can hear it. Please don?t do that. You won?t learn anything on the first day of class other than you should NEVER bring a textbook to class on the first day of class EVER again.

8. DO NOT surf your laptop on the first day!?

This is another one that mirrors jumping from the hot tub to the cold lake. In high school, anything electronic was prohibited. So now you get to a place where electronic devices are, for the most part, widely accepted and encouraged. Don?t abuse this privilege. If you don?t need your computer for the class, you?ll know within the first 5-10 minutes. So don?t be the freshman looking for things to do on your computer just to make yourself look busy or feel like you?re actually in college. Just listen and sit still.

9. Pace yourself!

There is going to be SO much going on during the first week of classes! Clubs are getting you to sign up for their organizations, there might be free cookouts, movie nights, people hanging out in the commons area? breathe. You don?t have to do EVERYTHING on the first day of classes. You?ll be there for four years, and these things aren?t going away anytime soon. Don?t break yourself trying be involved with everything.

10. BE. IN. THE. MOMENT.

Enjoy it. I wish I could tell you that four years feels like forever. I wish I could tell you that college moves just as slow, if not slower, than high school. But I can?t tell you these things. College is going to be the best four years of your life. It?ll be filled with great memories, laughs, friends, and unforgettable moments. You?ll also learn the most about yourself by being on your own and figuring out stuff for yourself. College is going to shape you. It?s going to try you. At times, it might even feel like it?s breaking you. You?ll love, you?ll lose, you?ll cry, but you?ll also succeed. Don?t let these moments pass you by without taking a second to be in the moment and swim in it all. College only comes once? ONCE? unless of course you flunk out and become a professional college student, but we won?t go there.

Zimbabwe: Hello Robert Mugabe, for five more years

Rivals say President Mugabe forces stole the elections, and are calling for nonviolent protest.

By Aislinn Laing,?Correspondent / August 1, 2013

If the top brass of Robert Mugabe's political party, the Zanu PF, are correct, Mr. Mugabe will be handed another five-year term of office to add to the 33 he has already spent in power.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

That result would quash the hopes, perhaps forever, of Morgan Tsvangirai, a former trade unionist who is on his third challenge to President Mugabe and has endured years of arrest and beatings by the Zimbabwean security forces for his political opposition.

There appear to be few overt clashes on the street. But tension is high over yesterday's vote that one side claims to have been rigged, even as many Zimbabweans today went about their business and seemed steeled for five more years. ?

Didymus Mutasa, a senior Zanu PF official and minister in Mugabe?s cabinet, said his party appeared to have won more than the 71 percent of the parliamentary vote they obtained at Zimbabwean independence three decades ago.

"From what we can tell from on the ground currently, we are definitely doing much better than in 1980," he said.?

He suggested that Mugabe had won big in the presidential poll. "There's no doubt that we are going to do much better than 50-plus-1 [the target for a presidential poll win that avoids a runoff] this time," he said.

Another, unnamed Zanu PF source told Reuters that they had ?buried? the Movement for Democratic Change [Tsvangirai's party]. ?We never had any doubt that we were going to win," the source said.

Riot police had gathered in Africa Unity Square, close to the MDC headquarters in downtown Harare, yesterday ? a flash point for clashes following previous, disputed elections in Zimbabwe.

Despite having been buzzing with excited party supporters wearing red t-shirts in the runup to the poll, the venerable Harvest House was closed yesterday, its metal gates firmly shut, and there was no one to be seen.?

Today, however, some campaign posters bearing Tsvangirai?s photograph and promising ?change? had been ripped down and fluttered around on the pavement.

Roy Bennett, an exiled MDC senator, issued a statement calling for a mass campaign of passive resistance.?

?There needs to be resistance against this theft. I'm talking about people completely shutting the country down - don't pay any bills, don't attend work, just bring the country to a standstill,? he said.

The MDC is also thought to be instructing lawyers to ask Zimbabwe?s Supreme Court to declare the elections invalid on the grounds that up to a million people had been denied their vote and opposition parties had been denied their legal right to examine the voters? roll before polls opened.

Tsvangirai told reporters that delayed reforms to the biased state media and security services had affected the poll, that Zanu PF supporters had been bused to voting places, and that in rural areas many voters were intimidated by traditional chiefs into supporting the party.

?This election has been a huge farce. It is a sham election that does not reflect the will of the people,? he said.

?The shoddy manner in which it has been conducted and the consequent illegitimacy of the result will plunge this country into a serious crisis.??

However, they may not get the backing from the international community that they have been calling for. America and the European Union were blocked from observing the vote and the task was handed instead to the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Although they have still to reveal their findings, SADC?s technical committee on Thursday praised Zimbabwe?s Electoral Commission for conducting?a "peaceful, credible and effective" process.

Independent election observers have, however, backed claims by Tsvangirai and his party that the electoral role had been ?systematically? tampered with.?

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network sent 7,000 observers around the country and said it was ?deeply concerned? about voter violations. Speaking at a press conference in the capital Harare yesterday, its chair Solomon Zwana said it had been much harder to vote in urban areas, where the MDC is strongest, than in rural areas, where Zanu PF holds most sway.

Mr. Zwana said it was not enough for the vote to have been peaceful. "For the election to be credible, they must offer all eligible citizens a reasonable opportunity to register to vote, to inform themselves about the candidates and for the votes to be properly counted," he said. "We are deeply concerned that for urban voters, the first three principles have been violated."

Tiseke Kasambala, from New York-based Human Rights Watch, agreed that there were ?major flaws? with the election process.

?We?ve spent weeks investigating the runup to the poll as well as informally watching the voting, and what we saw supports wider concerns raised today by local monitors,? she said. ?These flaws and irregularities call into question the credibility and fairness of the election.?

The Inside Story of the Moto X: The Reason Google Bought Motorola

But the flashy part of the Moto X?s personality is what users might bring to it via Moto Maker, a factory personalization scheme reminiscent of mass individualized products like the Nike iD shoe. A website allows Moto X buyers to customize the phone, choosing from 18 colors and materials for the back of the device as well as different accents for the ring around the camera lens and the volume and on-off buttons. Soon after launch, Motorola will offer actual wood veneers. You can even choose headphones in matching or contrasting colors. Those choosing this ?virtual SKU? also enter their software preferences, and in four days or less receive the phone, ready to use out of the box. (For a limited time after launch only AT&T customers can do this?later, Motorola will open it to its other carriers: Verizon, Sprint, T Mobile and US Cellular.) Just as with the Kindle, the device already knows who you are?so it?s not surprising that Motorola?s VP of supply side and operations is Mark Randall, who left a similar job at Amazon.

What?s more, Motorola will be assembling these phones in a newly acquired factory?not in Tianjin, China but Austin, Texas. (The facility was originally built for Nokia.) Motorola rebuilt the 480,000 square foot factory to copy the exact manufacturing process used in China, except for the brand-new, highly-automated process that can deliver any of the thousands of potential color combinations that customers specify. ?Many supply chain theorists and academics says you can?t do this, but when you tell Google it?s impossible, the reaction is, ?Let?s go do it,? says Randall.

It will be interesting to see what happens in AT&T stores when people are faced with the option of going through a selection process and waiting four days for a phone, or just picking a black and white phone and leaving with it on the spot. ?We?ve done plenty of studies and think there are lots of people who are willing to wait,? says Woodside. ?If you start offering materials like wood, the number goes up dramatically.?

Pure Android?almost. In the past few years Google?s Android partners have tweaked the operating system, sometimes slapping on entirely new interfaces. They do this because they feel that running a vanilla system fails to differentiate them from competitors. Overall, the Android ecosystem is threatened by a trend towards ?forking? different versions. Motorola takes a polar opposite approach?as a division of Google, its mission is to highlight the vision of the Android team, and so its version is as mildly modified as possible. It?s basically a stock build of Android 4.2.2, with most of the customization around the notifications, voice activation, and the camera. This approach positions Motorola to provide more timely upgrades, which have been problematic in the Android ecosystem. ?Nobody?s buying products because of minor incremental improvements to Android,? says Steve Horowitz, Motorola?s head of software (and part of Google?s original Android team). ?So let?s rely on what the Android team does and build experiences that will leverage Google services?and then you see things like touchless control, an entry point to Google Now.?

Ever since the Motorola deal was announced, Google has made a point of saying that its company-owned mobile hardware company won?t get special access to the Android team, and will be treated the same as Samsung, HTC and other Android partners. When Woodside repeated this, saying that, for example, Motorola would have to compete just like its rivals to make the next Nexus phone?a model co-designed by Google to showcase the Android system and other hardware innovations concocted by Google?I asked him what possibly could be different in a Motorola-partnered Nexus phone than the current Googly creation that his team has concocted. He was temporarily speechless. ?That?s a good question,? he finally said before reiterating how important it is for the Android ecosystem to grow and thrive.

When you talk to Motorola?s leadership team, at a certain point, their message is, unsurprisingly, indistinguishable from Google?s. Certainly both parties must sense that Motorola?s handset competitors?even the seemingly-impervious Apple and Samsung?are moving by increments, not leaps. And they smell blood. ?Three years isn?t long term for Google?ten years is long term for Google,? says Arshad. ?We want to create that future of cognitive computing?that?s our goal.?

To do so, Motorola Mobility has modeled its long-range research group, Advanced Technology and Products (ATAP), on an outfit known for delivering blockbusters like stealth bombers, autonomous cars, and the Internet. That?s DARPA, the government Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Hoping to get similar jaw-droppers, Motorola hired the head of DARPA, Regina Dugan, who brought along her deputy, Ken Gabriel. ?We asked ourselves?what were the elements that made DARPA so successful, and could you translate it to an industrial setting,? says Dugan. To her, the key was adopting fast-developing technology just at the point where it can be put to use.

Like DARPA, Motorola?s ATAP hires researchers (it calls them Technical Program Leads) for two-year stints?short enough to put pressure on them to work intensely but long enough to bring something to demo. In an unusual move for a corporate group (but standard for DARPA), the program leads contract with outside researchers to develop parts of their projects. ?When we?re trying to solve a hard technical problem, we go where the best people are,? Dugan says. One current project draws on 40 computer vision experts working for 30 entities, including private industry and six universities, hailing from five countries. ?In six months we retired the most significant technical risk of the program,? she says.

Even though the project leads? two-year terms are only half up, some of their work appears in the Moto X?for instance, the password-free NFC token. (Down the road, says Dugan, Google is working on more exotic versions based on temporary tattoos and even edible tokens that you gulp down like pills.) Dugan?s team also contributed to the Moto X?s quick-capture photography and maker-style personalization.

?Some think that it?s hard to get a return on higher-risk projects,? says Dugan. ?I?ve found the opposite. When you focus on those things, you yield returns more often?that?s where the epic shit is.?

In short, Google is doubling down on its massive acquisition fee to make phones that push technology and, not incidentally, promote Android and Google services in general. Building Motorola itself into a profitable entity is not an immediate objective. ?Of course we can?t be a drain on the company forever,? says Woodside, ?but the goal is not necessarily to make massive amounts of money in a short period of time?we have a much longer time horizon than that.?

Oregon Community Colleges Join American Student Assistance Movement?to Address College Affordability, Student Debt?

Salem, OR?? Fourteen Oregon community colleges have teamed up with American Student Assistance? (ASA) on a movement to address the college affordability issue by revolutionizing how students and alumni finance and repay their higher education. Through a game-changing educational membership program called SALT, Oregon?s community colleges and ASA? are helping students learn how to navigate higher education financing, successfully manage any resulting debt, and build money skills for life.

While a college degree has never been more valuable than in today?s global economy, many students and families are unsure of how to successfully pay for higher education. Approximately 12 million students borrow for college each year, but many make uninformed decisions, either borrowing more than they need or failing to take advantage of loans that offer the lowest rates and flexible payment options. A record one-in-five households now owe student loan debt, 5 million Americans are behind on their student loan payments, and more than 13 percent of student borrowers default within the first three years. Struggling student loan borrowers delay purchasing homes, cars, and other consumer goods, with dire consequences on the U.S. economy.

These community colleges and ASA are taking steps to address this higher education and economic crisis with SALT, a dynamic, multichannel educational program that combines online and offline interactions to deliver decision support, engaging content, and one-on-one loan repayment guidance in a simple, useful, and motivating experience.

SALT uses a variety of channels to meaningfully engage student and alumni members and positively influence behavior. Members receive proactive communication about student loan repayment options; one-on-one repayment counseling with student loan experts; a personalized online dashboard to track all their federal and private student loans in one place and compare payment options; a highly interactive Web financial education curriculum and other educational content; multiple self-serve Web tools and calculators to assist with budgeting; in-person group financial education training at their higher education institution; advocacy and assistance with resolving complex student loan related problems; and meaningful benefits and incentives relevant to either the higher education experience or to the financial needs they face after completing college, such as assistance with job/internship and scholarship searches.

SALT is created by American Student Assistance, a 56-year-old nonprofit that empowers college students and alumni to successfully manage and repay their student loan debt. Previous ASA programs have demonstrated that students provided with proactive, customized, and targeted communication are 50 percent less likely to fail in loan repayment.

SALT schools? students and alumni automatically become SALT members and gain full access to the program?s services. Multiple administrative offices on campus, from financial aid and the bursar to student affairs, alumni, and development, will actively partner with ASA to drive SALT awareness and engagement among on-campus students and alumni.

As a public purpose nonprofit organization, ASA is committed to offering SALT services free of charge to student and alumni members whose higher education institutions participate in the program. In order to do so, ASA has established a contribution-based model whereby multiple stakeholders interested in student success, including federal or state government entities, colleges and universities, foundations or other non-profit organizations, and corporate sponsors, contribute to the overall cost of delivering service. The Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development (CCWD) is one such stakeholder who has chosen to invest in this initiative to make it possible for so many colleges to participate.

?CCWD is excited to join the SALT movement because we believe in the program?s principles of financial education and empowerment to help address the issues of college affordability and student debt,? said Elizabeth Cox Brand, Director of Research and Communications for CCWD, ?Students and alumni deserve the proper support network to help them finance their education and manage any resulting debt. We?re committed to playing our role in ensuring that students and alumni have access to these critical education debt management and financial education services.?

Participating community colleges include: Clatsop, Mt. Hood, Blue Mountain, Tillamook Bay, Lane, Clackamas, Linn-Benton, Central Oregon, Klamath, Rogue, Columbia Gorge, Umpqua, Southwestern, and Treasure Valley.

Do you have large testicles? If so, you should probably show them to your doctor and not in a ?Hey Doc, look at my big awesome balls? kind of way?

According to a group of Italian scientists, large testicles may heighten your risk of having heart problems later in life. In fact, large testicles may actually indicate poor health and the size of your testicles may be used to measure your risk of heart disease.

Giulia Rasterelli, from the University of Florence, ?said, ?Although it is generally assumed that testis size can predict reproductive fitness, our results indicate that this objective parameter can provide insights also on overall health and [cardiovascular disease] risk.?

However, we wouldn?t get too worked up about the news if you happen to be sporting a pair of Randy Marsh sized nards. The Telegraph reports: ?? the study may not be applicable to the wider population as it only looked at men with a sexual dysfunction, who can often have other health problems.?

The researchers examined over 2,800 males who had attended a clinic for sexual health problems and they followed 1,395 of the men over a seven-year period. They found that the lads with the bigger balls tended to have an increased risk of heart disease.

So just be careful the next time you start boasting about your massive cojones.
