Dan Henderson gets bigger payday than Ronda Rousey, but disclosed sums don?t tell whole story

The California Athletic Commission announced the reported salaries from UFC 157 over the weekend. While Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche dominated headlines with the first female bout in UFC history, it was Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson who made the biggest sums of reported money after squaring off in 157's co-main event.

Here are the reported salaries of the top five fights from the card (via MMA Weekly):

Ronda Rousey: $90,000 (includes $45,000 win bonus) def. Liz Carmouche: $12,000

Lyoto Machida: $200,000 (no win bonus) def. Dan Henderson: $250,000

Urijah Faber: $100,000 (includes $50,000 win bonus) def. Ivan Menjivar: $17,000

Court McGee: $40,000 (includes $20,000 win bonus) def. Josh Neer: $16,000

Robbie Lawler: $105,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus) def. Josh Koscheck: $78,000

It may stand out to the casual fan that Rousey and Carmouche made much less money on paper than Henderson and Machida. But there are a few things to consider as the money disclosed here is only what promoters are required to report by law.

It does not include money the fighters make of pay-per-view sales. Quite often, fighters at the top of the card will make a percentage of the pay-per-view profits. Early reports have UFC 157 with 400-500,000 pay-per-views, so it could mean a good payday for the headliners.

The UFC also is known to give out "locker room bonuses," or extra money because of a good performance that they are not required to report to the athletic commissions.

During the run-up to UFC 157, Carmouche talked about how she didn't have much furniture in her home and drove a rundown car. UFC president Dana White promised after the fights that her furniture-less days are over.

"She going to have a kitchen table, and a couch, and whatever else the [expletive] she wants," White said.

Also, Henderson and Machida are UFC veterans whose payouts are decided by their contracts well in advance of their fights. Rousey and Carmouche were the main event because the UFC standard is to put the championship fight as the main event. Henderson and Machida taking home more listed money is akin to Mike Trout making $480,000 and Vernon Wells making $21 million for the Los Angeles Angels. Trout finished second in American League MVP voting but makes much less because he's a rookie and not a veteran like Wells.

To use another example, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made much less money than backup Alex Smith. Kaepernick will eventually get paid as his star blossoms but it doesn't change the paycheck he took home from the Super Bowl.

California couple feared missing in Peru turn up on safe on river boat

LIMA (Reuters) - A young California couple feared by family to have been abducted while on a cycling trip through Peru have safely surfaced on a river boat headed for Ecuador, surprised to learn they were subjects of an international search, the Peruvian government said on Tuesday.

"The American tourists are continuing to enjoy their trip in the Peruvian Amazon," the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism said in a statement, adding that a national police official had spoken with the couple and found them to be "in good health."

Garrett Hand and his girlfriend, Jamie Neal, both 25, had last been heard from by friends and relatives about a month ago, according to co-workers and a statement issued on Monday by the U.S. Embassy in Lima, the Peruvian capital.

The embassy said then that Peruvian authorities had mounted a search for the pair, who are residents of Oakland, California.

The couple were said to have vanished while en route to Lima from Cusco, in the mountainous southeastern Peruvian interior near the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, an area where U.S. citizens have been warned by the embassy of kidnapping risks.

That advisory last month was widely interpreted as linked to efforts by a remnant band of Maoist Shining Path rebels to repel a government push to regain control of jungle valleys that are rife with coca cultivation and cocaine trafficking.

Friends and family of Hand and Neal said they worried the pair had been abducted and that their bank accounts had remained idle since they disappeared.

But a day after relatives and co-workers went public with efforts to organize a search for the couple, the Peruvian government said national police had caught up with the duo in the northern village of Angoteros along the Napo River.

SURPRISED BY CONCERN

The tourism ministry said the couple were passengers on a boat headed up the river, a tributary of the Amazon, to a town on the border with Ecuador.

The couple "were surprised by the concern generated by family, friends and the international community after the cessation of their communications in late January," a ministry statement said.

It added that the pair had been traveling overland by bicycle, bus and river boat through remote areas where access to telephones and the Internet was limited.

Meanwhile, Hand's mother, Francine Fitzgerald, posted a message on Facebook saying she had been informed by U.S. Embassy and Peruvian authorities that the couple were spotted in a remote village and were now on a river boat.

She gave few other details but said she would not be satisfied until receiving "proof of life" from her son.

"Proof of life is my son's voice on the phone and a picture of him holding the missing poster," she wrote.

ABC News reported on Tuesday that the tourism ministry was sending a crew with video cameras to the location where the couple's boat is scheduled to dock on Wednesday to show they are alive and well.

The U.S. Embassy issued a separate statement saying it was aware of "reports that the missing U.S. citizens have been located," adding, "we are working with local authorities to confirm those reports."

The location of the couple in northern Peru was reinforced by previous accounts from police and officials of an ecological community in the Amazonian region of Iquitos. They had told Reuters earlier this week that Hand and Neal were seen embarking on an upriver boat trip toward Ecuador on February 16, three weeks after their families had last heard from them.

Mattei takes 'step up' to role in 'Parsifal'

It's midmorning, less than 12 hours after he finished another grueling performance as the tormented Amfortas in Wagner's "Parsifal," and Peter Mattei is already singing again.

"My voice is in perfect shape. I could do a show tonight," the Swedish baritone said in an interview last week, midway through a seven-performance run of Wagner's final opera. "I check after each performance. I sing some Bach, some lieder, because I want to make sure everything's OK. So far, so good."

Better than good, the critics agree. James Jorden in the New York Post praised his "velvety baritone," while Manuela Hoelterhoff for Bloomberg News enthused: "I don't think better singers exist anywhere in the world, especially Peter Mattei as Amfortas."

Listeners have a chance to judge for themselves Saturday when a live matinee performance will be broadcast on the radio and shown in HD on movie theaters around the world. Headlining the cast of the new Francois Girard production are tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, bass Rene Pape and soprano Katarina Dalayman. Daniele Gatti conducts.

He's the leader of the Knights of the Grail, but is unable to perform his duties because of an agonizing wound inflicted on him by a sorcerer after he was seduced by a beautiful woman. His two long monologues in Acts 1 and 3 are punctuated by cries of rage and remorse, often over heavy orchestration.

When Mattei agreed to debut the role at the Met, he was known mostly as a Mozart singer, and the only Wagner he had sung was the lyrical Wolfram in "Tannhaeuser." At first, Mattei confided, "I was a little nervous to do it. Wolfram for me was spot on, but I knew Amfortas was a step up dramatically.

"You have to dig in a little bit," he said. "But I try to do it in the same way as Wolfram, because the beautiful melodies are really there, even if it is very powerful sometimes."

In the Girard production, the physical demands are as great as the vocal ones. While some Amfortases are carried in a chair or stretcher, Mattei staggers on and off the stage leaning on two extras, who have to support virtually his entire weight. Since Mattei is well over 6 feet, that's no easy task, for him or for them.

"Girard told me, 'They are your legs,'" Mattei said. "He told me Amfortas has syphilis, so that's why his legs aren't working. The bone structure is breaking up. My body has this huge tension, singing crumpled over, not using my legs and always leaning on somebody."

Mattei said he wasn't familiar with "Parsifal" when he began studying the role last summer. "I found it a very good piece to not know so much about," he said, "because then you can just listen to the music, and you'll have a much more instinctive input from Wagner than from a professor who knows everything about Wagner and can explain it for days."

Mattei, 47, was born in the town of Pitea in northern Sweden into a family he describes as "quite poor." His father, an Italian, worked in a factory and his mother sold bread in a shop. He said he began singing "before I could speak," though he didn't study music full-time until he was 18.

"Singing is something I cannot be without," he said. "Even if there's no audience. It's a need." In fact, during the interview ? conducted in the Manhattan apartment where he was awaiting the arrival of his wife and two young children from Sweden ? he repeatedly broke into snatches of an aria or recitative to illustrate a point about this or that role.

Mattei made his professional debut in Mozart's "La Finta Giardiniera" at the Drottningholm Court Theatre in 1990, and a year later he drew acclaim in Sweden in Daniel Bortz's "The Bacchae," directed by Ingmar Bergman at the Royal Swedish Opera. An international career soon followed.

He'll be back at the Met next season for Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." Beyond that, he said, he's interested in exploring some Verdi roles, including the Marquis di Posa in Verdi's "Don Carlo," a role he has sung only in Scandinavia.

And more Wagner? "Maybe the young Wotan," he said, referring to the god who appears in "Das Rheingold," the first opera in the "Ring" cycle.

His fans will be keeping their fingers crossed for that one.

Dying man holds his own wake - London Free Press

Reg Lansdowne wanted to celebrate his life, so he brought his friends and family together and held his own wake and one last epic celebration before he dies.

Lansdowne, a Wallaceburg resident, held a celebration in his honour at the CBD club in January. Like most wakes or funerals it featured a coffin, eulogies and a few tears and laughs. The only thing different from most wakes and funerals was that Lansdowne was there in person to see it.

?Why should everyone cry at a funeral?? Lansdowne asked. ?Let's party.?

Lansdowne has a larger-than-life persona. Outgoing and with a large laugh, he dominates any room he walks into. He likes a good time, and due to his large number of friends and an outgoing personality, he has the nickname The Mayor.

?I can make any day a holiday,? jokes Lansdowne.

But Mayor Reg is dying. He has COPD, damaged nerves in his back and a host of other health problems.

?I can go at any time,? he acknowledges.

Originally from Windsor, Lansdowne has called Wallaceburg his home for 12 years.

Part of the reason why he wanted to hold one last celebration is because when his mom was sick she wanted to hold one last party this summer, but she was too sick to attend and died in August.

When Lansdowne received his inheritance he knew he wanted to take part of it and spend it on one last party before he died.

He said everybody was laughing at his celebration. About 150 people attended.

?Everybody enjoyed it.?

The celebration was a good way for Lansdowne to hear good things about himself, things he wouldn't have heard after he died. Three people gave eulogies, including his sister and a couple of friends.

The celebration included a pig roast and a band. A hearse brought Lansdowne to his party. It also included a coffin, which Lansdowne built himself.

?I couldn't stop laughing. I never had such a great party. Everyone said it was one of the best parties I've ever thrown and I've thrown a lot of parties.

When he dies, Lansdowne said it will be a simple affair.

?I'm being cremated and no more funeral.?

Second blizzard bearing down on Plains region

DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) ? A second major winter storm was bearing down on the central Plains Sunday, forcing cancellations and sending public works crews scrambling for salt and sand supplies less than a week after another system dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the region.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard watch from Sunday evening through late Monday for much of western Kansas ahead of the strong storm system packing high winds and sleet that has been tracking across western Texas toward Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. The area was hit by a massive storm last week that dumped a foot of snow in some sections, closed airports and caused numerous accidents.

"It would have been nice if we'd had a few days to recover, to do some equipment rehab," said Joe Pajor, deputy director of public works in Wichita, which saw its second-highest snowfall ever Thursday with 14.2 inches.

Other totals from the Thursday snowstorm included 18 inches in the southern Kansas town of Zenda; 17 inches in Hays, Kan.; about 13 inches in northeast Missouri and 12 inches of snow in parts of Kansas City.

Steve Corfidi, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said the storm also will affect southern states and could spawn tornadoes Tuesday in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Georgia.

"It definitely will be one of the more significant events of the season, the winter season, absolutely, Corfidi said. "Both in winter weather and severe weather potential, and rain, down in the southeast United States."

More than a foot of snow is possible from the Texas Panhandle, across the Oklahoma Panhandle and into Kansas and possibly Missouri as the storm moves eastward from the southwestern United States.

While snowfall is expected to taper off by Monday afternoon, wind gusts of up to 35 mph will remain a hazard, said Sarah Johnson, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service's Amarillo, Texas, office.

Pajor told The Wichita Eagle (http://bit.ly/Xz0v0k) the new storm "looks worse than the last one" and that sand and salt supplies are low because of last week's record storm, as are the number of locations where snow can be transported off city streets. He said the plowing strategy for the new blizzard may have to involve plowing snow into the center of arterial streets, and cutting traffic to one lane each direction.

He also said streets won't be treated with the city's limited sand and salt supplies until the snow ends and plowing is under way.

The threat of the pending storm forced cancellations Sunday and Monday in Kansas and Missouri, including the championship basketball tournament for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association, which rescheduled the tournament for Tuesday in Park City, Kan.

Matt Lehenbauer, emergency management director for Woodward County, Okla., said he expects rain or snow to begin there Sunday evening and forecast up to a foot of snow and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

"We're expecting white out conditions," he said.

He said there is plenty of salt and sand on hand to help clear roads, but the conditions may cause delays.

"We may not get the roads cleared until midday Tuesday if we get the expected amount of snow and wind. As its falling, in the blizzard-like conditions, we just won't be able to keep up," he said.

UK Cardinal skips conclave amid accusations

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Cardinal Keith O'Brien, Britain's highest-ranking Catholic leader, said Monday he wouldn't take part in the conclave to elect the next pope after being accused of improper conduct with priests ? an unprecedented first head to roll in the mudslinging that has followed Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign.

Benedict accepted O'Brien's resignation as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh ? submitted back in November because he is due to turn 75 next month, the normal retirement age for bishops. But simultaneously, O'Brien issued a statement Monday saying he would also skip the conclave because he didn't want to become the focus of media attention at such a delicate time for the church.

O'Brien has said through his spokesman that he is contesting allegations made Sunday in a British newspaper that three priests and a former priest have filed complaints to the Vatican alleging that the cardinal acted inappropriately with them. The Observer newspaper did not name the priests, but it said their allegations date back to the 1980s. There were no details about the alleged inappropriate behavior.

It was the first time that a cardinal has said he was staying away from a conclave because of personal scandal, and comes in the wake of a grass-roots campaign to shame another cardinal, retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, into refraining from participating because of his role protecting sexually abusive priests.

Mahony, however, has said he will participate in the voting for the new pope.

With O'Brien's decision and the illness of an Indonesian cardinal, there are expected to be 115 cardinals under age 80 who are eligible to vote in the conclave.

Separately Monday, Benedict changed the rules of the conclave, allowing cardinals to move up the start date if all of them arrive in Rome before the usual 15-day waiting period between the end of one pontificate and the start of the conclave. Benedict signed a legal document, issued Monday, making some changes to the 1996 Vatican law governing the election of a new pope. It was one of his last acts as pope before resigning Thursday.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24 and Easter Sunday is March 31. In order to have a new pope in place for the church's most solemn liturgical period, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17, a tight timeframe if a conclave were to start on March 15, as per the previous rules.

And in another development Monday, Benedict decided that the contents of a secret investigation into the 2012 leaks of Vatican documents won't be shared with the cardinals ahead of the conclave. Benedict met Monday with the three elderly cardinals who conducted the probe and decided that "the acts of the investigation, known only to himself, remain solely at the disposition of the new pope," a Vatican statement said.

Speculation has been rife in the Italian media that the three cardinals ? Julian Herranz, Jozef Tomko and Salvatore De Giorgi ? would be authorized to share the information with fellow cardinals before the conclave. That assumed the cardinal electors would want to know details about the state of dysfunction in the Vatican bureaucracy and on any potentially compromised colleagues before possibly voting one into office.

Benedict appointed the three men last year to investigate the origins of leaks of the pope's documents, and they had wide-ranging powers to question cardinals. The leaked documents revealed petty wrangling, corruption, cronyism and even allegations of a gay plot at the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The pope's butler was convicted of aggravated theft in October for having stolen the papers and given them to a journalist who then published them in a blockbuster book.

While the three cardinals cannot share the full contents of their investigation, it's unclear if they could give subtle hints about potential papal candidates.

O'Brien's decision to remain home rather than participate in the conclave made him the first head to roll in the remarkable two weeks since Benedict, 85, stunned the world and announced he was becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign. The pope said he simply didn't have the "strength of mind and body" to carry on.

The Vatican confirmed that O'Brien had resigned as archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh but insisted that the accusations against him had nothing to do with his resignation. The Vatican said the pope accepted the resignation on Feb. 18 under canon law due to O'Brien's age; he turns 75 on March 17. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, refused to say whether the allegations had any effect on Benedict's decision to accept O'Brien's resignation, saying merely that Benedict was clearing his tasks before retiring himself.

O'Brien said in a statement that he is in "indifferent health" and had offered his resignation last November.

"Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended," O'Brian said.

"I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me - but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor," O'Brien said. "However, I will pray with them and for them that, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they will make the correct choice for the future good of the church."

During a briefing with reporters at the Vatican last week, a Vatican historian, Ambrogio Piazzoni, was asked about the campaign to keep Mahony away from the voting because he covered up sexual abuse by priests. Piazzoni said while in the past some cardinals have been impeded either by illness or by interference from their governments, none has stayed away because of a stain on his own reputation.

He noted that any decision would have to be approved by the full College of Cardinals, given that the main duty of a cardinal is to vote in a conclave.

"The thing that characterizes a cardinal is to be an elector of the pope," he told reporters

O'Brien's decision to skip the conclave is far different from that of Cardinal Bernard Law, who was forced to resign as archbishop of Boston in 2002 when the U.S. sex abuse scandal erupted. Law, accused of having covered up the actions of pedophile priests, participated in the conclave that elected Benedict and kept a plum job of archpriest of one of Rome's main basilicas until his retirement.

Memory strategy may help depressed people remember the good times

Feb. 25, 2013 ? New research highlights a memory strategy that may help people who suffer from depression in recalling positive day-to-day experiences.

The study is published in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Previous research has shown that being able to call up concrete, detailed memories that are positive or self-affirming can help to boost positive mood for people with a history of depression. But it's this kind of vivid memory for everyday events that seems to be dampened for people who suffer from depression.

Researcher Tim Dalgleish of the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit and colleagues hypothesized that a well-known method used to enhance memory -- known as the "method-of-loci" strategy -- might help depressed patients to recall positive memories with greater ease.

The method-of-loci strategy consists of associating vivid memories with physical objects or locations -- buildings you see on your commute to work every day, for instance. To recall the memories, all you have to do is imagine going through your commute.

In the study, depressed patients were asked to come up with 15 positive memories. One group was asked to use the method-of-loci strategy to create associations with their memories, while a control group was asked to use a simple "rehearsal" strategy, grouping memories based on their similarities.

After practicing their techniques, the participants were asked to recall as many of their 15 positive memories as they could.

The two methods were equally effective on the initial memory test conducted in the lab -- both groups were able to recall nearly all of the 15 memories.

But the strategies were not equally effective over time.

After a week's worth of practice at home, the participants received a surprise phone call from the researchers, who asked them to recall the memories one more time.

Participants who used the method-of-loci technique were significantly better at recalling their positive memories when compared to those who used the rehearsal technique.

These data suggest that using the method-of-loci technique to associate vivid, positive memories with physical objects or locations may make it easier for depressed individuals to recall those positive memories, which may help to elevate their mood in the long-term.

In addition to Dalgleish, co-authors on this research include Lauren Navrady, Elinor Bird, Emma Hill, Barnaby Dunn and Ann-Marie Golden, all of the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit.

Duracell Powermat is announcing a pair of new features to encourage sales of its wireless charging gear. The first is "Mesh Network," a set of controls that let multiple hotspots be centrally monitored -- so if you're stealing all the juice in the Wall St. Starbucks, central office can cut you off. On the upside, those same network features will enable you to find another charging hotspot on your smartphone, including Madison Square Garden and Jay-Z's 40/40 club. South Africa complete whitewash against Pakistan

Sports, Cricket News ? South Africa crushed Pakistan by an innings and 18 runs and completed the clean sweep on day three of the third test at Centurion on Sunday.

Pakistan could make 235 runs in the second innings.

Starting the day on 14 for one, Pakistan showed some fighting spirit losing only Younus Khan (11), who played a thick edge off Dale Steyn to Graeme Smith at first slip, in the morning session.

Azhar Ali (27) and Imran Farhat put on 54 for the third wicket before the former ran himself out in calamitous fashion.

Farhat worked the ball to fine leg and after running one, Ali turned for a second at the wicketkeeper?s end. He was always struggling against the bullet throw of Steyn from the boundary and in the end was well short.
Pakistan lost two more wickets with the score on 107 as they began to implode.

Kyle Abbott picked up his eighth wicket of the match when Farhat (43) slashed at a wide delivery and was caught by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq (5) then became Rory Kleinveldt?s first wicket of the game when he got a thin edge to a ball. Kleinveldt soon took a second when Asad Shafiq (6) scooped a delivery to Vernon Philander at mid-off.

South Africa made 409 in their first innings.

Vatican calls reports of conspiracy by Italian media 'completely false'

Since Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation the Italian media has speculated there could be more to the story, and has written unflattering stories about the Vatican's administration. On Saturday, the Vatican accused the Italian media of spreading false reports.

The?Vatican?on Saturday accused the Italian media of spreading "false and damaging" reports in what it condemned as a deplorable attempt to influence cardinals who will meet in a secret conclave next month to elect a new pope.

Since Pope Benedict announced his resignation on Feb. 11, Italian newspapers have been full of rumours about conspiracies, secret reports and lobbies in the?Vatican?that they say pushed the pope to abdicate.

"It is deplorable that, as we draw closer to the time of the beginning of the conclave ... that there be a widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions," a?Vatican?statement said.

The Italian reports have painted an unflattering picture of the?Vatican's central administration, known as the Curia, depicting it as being full of prelates more concerned with their careers than serving the Church or the pope.

Some Church officials, speaking privately, have said foreign cardinals coming to?Rome?to choose the next pope have been alarmed over reports of corruption and might be inclined to elect someone not connected with the Curia, which is predominantly Italian.

The?Vatican?statement said the Italian media reports were an attempt to influence the outcome of the conclave through negative public opinion much like states and kings tried to influence papal elections centuries ago.

The pope has announced that he will step down on Feb. 28, becoming the first pontiff to abdicate in some six centuries.

The 85-year-old Benedict said his failing health no longer enabled him to run the 1.2-billion-member?Roman Catholic Church?as he would like.

DISCREDITING THE CHURCH

In a separate statement, Father?Federico Lombardi, the?Vatican?spokesman, said the reports were trying to "discredit the Church and its government" ahead of the conclave.

Italy's Repubblica newspaper ran a series of unsourced stories this week about the alleged contents of a secret report prepared for the pope by a commission of three cardinals who investigated the so-called Vatileaks scandal last year.

Amla half-century propels South Africa against Pakistan

PRETORIA (Reuters) - Hashim Amla was denied a century but helped South Africa to 201 for five at tea on the opening day of the third test against Pakistan at Centurion on Friday.

Amla struck 92 off 128 balls before he was out attempting to cut a wide delivery from Rahat Ali and got a faint edge through to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

AB de Villers (40) and Robin Peterson (two), fresh from an 84 in the last test in Cape Town, will resume after the interval.

Rahat, with figures of 3-57, has helped put Pakistan in the ascendancy after Amla and Faf du Plessis got South Africa back on track following a poor start.

Openers Graeme Smith (five) and Alviro Petersen (10) both struggled early on as Pakistan's bowlers used the seamer-friendly conditions to their advantage inside the first hour.

Petersen's miserable series continued when he was trapped plum lbw by Rahat, who returned to the side after missing the second test in Cape Town.

Smith battled for 47 minutes to reach five before he became debutant Ehsan Adil's first wicket in test cricket with just the third ball of the seamer's spell when a touch of away movement found his edge and looped towards Younus Khan at second slip.

Du Plessis (29) came in at number four in the place of Kallis and after a slow start crashed three boundaries off one Adil over to get his innings up and running.

Adil got his revenge after lunch though, inducing an edge to Sarfraz after the batsman advanced down the track to the medium pacer.

It ended a partnership of 69 between Amla and Du Plessis that helped the hosts recover from 38 for two early on.

De Villiers put on 79 with Amla before the latter fell and shortly afterwards Dean Elgar (seven) was trapped lbw by Rahat.

South Africa had weakened their batting line-up by replacing the injured Jacques Kallis with debutant swing bowler Kyle Abbott, elevating Peterson up to number seven.

South Africa lead the three-match series 2-0 having won the first test in Johannesburg by 211 runs, before completing the series win with a four wicket victory in Cape Town.

Boeing proposes full 787 battery fix to FAA

Boeing gave U.S. aviation regulators its plan to fix the volatile battery aboard its new 787 Dreamliner on Friday, even before investigators know what caused the batteries to overheat on two planes last month.

Boeing will not propose abandoning the lithium-ion batteries, however, and is not working on a backup or longer-term fix for the problem that has grounded its entire fleet of 50 787 Dreamliners, three sources familiar with the plan said.

The proposal, made to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, includes specific measures aimed at addressing possible causes of short-circuits that prompted one of the lithium-ion batteries on board a 787 to catch fire at a Boston airport in January, the sources said. A second battery smoldered during a flight in Japan a few days later, leading to an emergency landing and evacuation.

The proposal includes insulation between the cells of the battery and a stronger, stainless steel box with a venting tube to contain a fire and expel fumes outside the aircraft should a battery catch fire again, the sources said.

"I have talked to a number of people who are working directly on these batteries. No one is on the Plan-B team," said a person familiar with Boeing's efforts who was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

Boeing's proposal to the FAA is not a temporary "band-aid" that would be supplanted by another solution later, said a second source, who also was not authorized to speak publicly.

The FAA said in a statement Friday that it is reviewing Boeing's proposal. "The safety of the flying public is our top priority and we won?t allow the 787 to return to commercial service until we?re confident that any proposed solution has addressed the battery failure risks," the statement said.

Boeing declined to comment specifically on its proposal, and reiterated that hundreds of engineers and technical experts are working "around the clock" to return the 787 fleet to service. "Everyone is working to get to the answer as quickly as possible and good progress is being made," spokesman Marc Birtel said.

Five weeks after U.S. authorities grounded the worldwide fleet of 787s, U.S., Japanese and French investigators are still not certain what caused the battery fire aboard an All Nippon Airways 787 in Boston and an overheated, smoking battery on a Japan Airlines 787 in Japan.

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the Boston fire and the Japan Transportation Safety Board is investigating the battery failure in Japan. Neither have found a root cause for the problems.

The sources said it is possible the NTSB might never determine the root cause.

Fallen 'Idol:' TV show winner held in Dominican

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) ? A winner of the TV talent show "Latin American Idol" who was once loved by thousands in her native Dominican Republic was charged with drug smuggling after police found heroin stuffed in the heels of her platform shoes, authorities said Thursday.

Martha Heredia was arrested late Wednesday as she was about to board a plane to New York, said Frank Duran, the National Drug Control Agency's director for the city of Santiago.

He said police found 2.9 pounds (1.3 kilograms) of heroin in the heels of three pairs of shoes packed in her suitcase. Police also ordered Heredia to undergo X-ray tests to determine whether she had any drugs hidden inside her body, but none were found.

Duran said police are interrogating Heredia to determine whether she was working as a mule for a drug-trafficking organization.

Prosecutor Luisa Liranzo said Heredia does not yet have an attorney. If found guilty, she could face more than 10 years in prison.

The 22-year-old had become a star in the Dominican Republic after she won the final "Latin American Idol" contest in 2009. The show, which ran for three years, was a Spanish-language version of the popular British "Idols" franchise.

On the night Heredia vied for the title, thousands of Dominicans gathered in public plazas to watch her sing on huge TV screens, and then-President Leonel Fernandez urged Dominicans to vote for her.

The country was paralyzed as Dominicans watched the show, prompting Fernandez to quip, "It was said the country came under curfew without the need of a presidential decree."

Miguel Vargas, president of the main opposition party at the time, had donated thousands of prepaid phone cards the night of the final contest so citizens could vote for their compatriot.

"Martha's tenacity and creative capacity are an example, and the least we can do is support her efforts," Vargas said at the time.

Dozens of fans greeted Heredia when she returned to the Dominican Republic after her win, and Fernandez invited her to the National Palace. In February 2010, he gave her the National Youth Award.

"The politicians are lucky you're not running for president because you would beat them all," he said at the time.

But Heredia, nicknamed "La Baby" because of her penchant for calling people "baby", disappeared shortly after all the fanfare, drawing speculations including that she was pregnant.

Then her name was back in the news for different reasons.

In December 2010, Heredia hit and killed a teenage Haitian boy with her car as he tried to cross a highway by foot. She was later ordered to pay his family some $275,000 as part of a lawsuit. The boy's relatives were angered that she did not meet with them to offer her condolences.

"That's not right," Elvys Vandredi, the victim's father, told a local TV station in a 2011 interview for a feature on Martha Heredia called "What happened to Martha Heredia?"

The TV station also featured an interview with Heredia, who said she granted the interview because she was tired of the rumors surrounding her disappearance from the local show business industry.

Heredia blamed her manager at the time for not scheduling concerts or public appearances.

"I need a person who barely sleeps, someone who is constantly connected to social media," she said.

In late 2011, she produced her first album titled "Lose or Win," which she recorded in Mexico under the Sony Music label. The first single did not do well.

Heredia's name disappeared once again and resurfaced last month when she filed a domestic violence complaint against her husband, Manuel Varet Marte, a hip-hop singer known as Vakero. He was ordered held in prison for three months as police investigate the case.

General Prosecutor Francisco Dominguez issued a statement saying Heredia's situation was unfortunate.

"It's very sad that young people who have so much promise, who were bestowed by life with all the grace in the world and an unquestionable talent, because of ambition, bad advice or simply to obtain money see themselves in situations like this," he said.

Mondi posts slight drop in full-year earnings

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African Paper maker Mondi said on Thursday it expects to reap the benefit of recent acquisitions after reporting a slight drop in full-year earnings on lower prices.

Mondi, which is also listed in London, said diluted headline earnings per share for the year to end December totalled 63.1 euro cents, from a 69.1 euro cents a year earlier.

Headline EPS is the key measure of profitability in South Africa and strips out certain one-off and non-trading items.

"We started 2012 with a difficult first quarter where volumes were still below normal and prices were starting to bottom out," Mondi Group chief executive David Hathorn told Reuters.

"On average pricing for last year was lower than it was for the previous year."

Mondi, mainly involved in the manufacture of packaging paper, said underlying operating profit fell 9 percent to 568 million euros.

The company is focusing on fast-growing businesses such as consumer packaging and announced several deals last year to boost its market position.

Mondi said its total dividend rose 8 percent to 28 euro cents.

The company's shares were little changed at 113.43 rand as of 0739 GMT, compared with a 0.65 percent fall in the Johannesburg's All-share Index.

Uncharacteristic feeding behavior from dolphins and whales is grabbing the attention of scientists ? and the public ? and so far is prompting more questions than answers about what's going on in the ocean depths.?

Blue whales, which usually hang out off Costa Rica this time of year, unexpectedly showed up in California's Monterey Bay over the past week, gorging on a sizable buffet of krill. Over the weekend, a huge population of short-beaked dolphins that stretched out over 35 miles indulged in a feeding frenzy off the coast of San Diego. Last fall, sperm whales appeared uncharacteristically in Canada's Bay of Fundy. In December, rare right whales, calves in tow, showed up months earlier than usual to feed off Massachusetts' Cape Cod.?

Were those thousands of dolphins who churned the coastal waters into a vast swath of sea foam just having a Presidents' Day party closer to shore than usual? Or, as some observers suggest, is all this unusual marine mammal activity a hint that some major disturbance is afoot in the oceans?

These are the kinds of big questions that scientists are reluctant to answer quickly when dramatic events occur.

Take the recent reappearance of porpoises in San Francisco Bay, after a 65-year absence.

?We like to study these long-term trends and really find out what is behind them,? says Bill Keener of Golden Gate Cetacean Research, a nonprofit organization set up to determine why porpoises suddenly returned to San Francisco after deserting the premises soon after World War II.

Most researchers concur that the ocean's hungry giants will follow the food wherever it takes them. Witness the blue whales feasting on krill in Monterey Bay. The ocean?s largest mammal consumes this tiny shrimp-like food by taking in vast gulps of seawater and forcing it back out through baleen plates at the front of its mouth.

Indeed, record supply of other food favorites, such as squid and mackerel, off both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts is attracting the whales and dolphins.?

On the Atlantic coast, scientists on Cape Cod and in Canada have noted that the ocean waters are warming, which could in turn affect the food supply for these big creatures. Warmer water speeds up growth rates of phytoplankton, the foundation of the food chain. That leads to more plankton, which are eaten by smaller fish who in turn are scooped up by the larger sea creatures.

But hard science is very hard to come by linking?climate change to anecdotal moments such as the unexpected offshore mega-pods of dolphins and whales, says Beth Pratt, California director of the National Wildlife Federation. ?Clearly, something is going on, but what has changed about the feeding has not been thoroughly researched yet,? she says. ?All these events are part of all of us saying, ?wow, we are observing? something unprecedented,' but we don?t know what it means yet.??

In the meantime, she says, observing the behavior of the planet?s top predators is meaningful even if the data are still forthcoming to help explain it. ?There are important questions still to be answered such as, what does this tell us about the part of climate change that we can control,? says Ms. Pratt. ?These are indicator species about the health of our oceans.?

Most of the planet is made up of ocean life, she notes. ?These species are the canaries in the mines of the most important life on our planet.??

Adding movement to 'dry run' mental imagery enhances performance

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Adding movement to mental rehearsal can improve performance finds a study in BioMed Central's open access journal Behavioral and Brain Functions. For high jumpers the study shows that dynamic imagery improves the number of successful attempts and the technical performance of jumps.

The technique of mental rehearsal is used to consolidate performance in many disciplines including music and sport. Motor imagery and physical practice use overlapping neural networks in the brain and the two together can improve performance as well as promoting recovery from injury. Researchers from the Centre de Recherche et d'Innovation sur le Sport found that adding simple movements to mental rehearsal could further improve performance by a third.

When they looked at the rates of 'hit' or 'miss' for high jumpers taught to use either internal visual imagery or external visual imagery (such as mimicking the arm movements during the jump), the researchers found that while mental rehearsal improved performance by 35%, mental rehearsal plus 'dry run' movements increased performance by 45%. Dynamic imagery scored the highest for all measured aspects of the jump including approach, curve, impulsion, and bar clearance. It also shortened the number of jumps required

Prof Aymeric Guillot, who led the study, said, "Our study on high jumpers suggests that dynamic imagery may provide a training edge to professional and amateur athletes. This technique may also be of use to people in other disciplines where 'dry run' rehearsals are routinely used."

MANILA, Philippines - I breathed in the fresh Tagaytay air as I got off the car and waited outside the gate of naturopathic doctor Dr. Day Tormo Montano?s family rest house, now a wellness center called Home of the Living Hope.

The bright reds and greens of a large anthurium garden greeted me and my companions; a charming house of sun-yellow and various shades of red rose above the garden. A pile of fresh pineapples near the doorstep beckoned.

Inside, bright and warm sunlight fell on a rainbow of fresh organic produce on the dining table, kitchen counters, and floor. Lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, bananas, mangoes, cauliflowers, broccoli, and wansoy were just some of what I remember seeing.

?Those tomatoes and bell peppers look plastic!? one of my companions exclaimed in disbelief.

I took a closer look. Indeed, the fruits were so colorful, with a waxy sheen. Most of the fresh produce, in fact, looked like they belonged in Photoshopped advertisements or stock photos.

And they?re organic! I later found out that many of them came from Dr. Day?s farm, also in Cavite.

After that visual overload, I looked forward to what we would have for lunch. A fresh, subtle aroma of herbs and vegetables wafted from the kitchen, where Dr. Day, her family, friends, and staff prepared the meal.

Dr. Day, a certified Hallelujah Diet health minister, raw food chef, and professor, explained that the menu for each day changes according to the available produce. But all meals are vegan, with some ? if not all ? dishes raw, following the principles of the Hallelujah Diet.

The Hallelujah Diet is a plant-based, mostly raw diet. Not only is it healthy, it also heals diseases like cancer, diabetes, and arthritis, based on studies and anecdotal evidence.

Taste was not compromised in favor of health. Our lunch certainly proved that. From our herbed and spiced squash soup to our fresh salad and vegan spaghetti, and finally a raw chocolate mousse dessert that tasted almost like its usual dairy and sugary version (and topped with red organic strawberries!), I was in foodie heaven.

In the past, I enjoyed the healthy options in some of Tagaytay?s garden restaurants; but this experience was different. It was just like eating at home, although in a different home that truly embodied health. That health could also be seen in the glow on Dr. Day and her family's faces.

Most striking was Dr. Day?s mother, Julie Saprid, who did not look her age of 83. She led me and other guests in a spontaneous aerobic exercise routine. I noticed she did not wear glasses when reading or writing.

What makes the meals at this home and wellness center different is that even the health conscious and gravely ill can eat to their heart?s content without worries ? and under doctor?s orders. After all, it is Dr. Day who prepares the menu.

It is in this home that Dr. Day welcomes not only the health conscious craving for a good meal but also people with terminal or debilitating illnesses; even those with minor health complaints. She has worked with and facilitated the healing of patients with cancer, diabetes, and other illnesses.

One of the patients I met during my visit reported a marked improvement. Due to a kidney disease that almost had him go for dialysis, he almost could not walk the first time he was at the center. During my visit, I saw him with a spring to his step ? literally. He went for a few rounds on the wellness center?s trampoline!

Dr. Day said that the philosophy of her wellness center is the ?healing of mind, body, and soul.?

Prior to opening the doors of her family?s rest house to the public as a wellness center, she already worked with patients. With a center, though, she could offer more complete, holistic healing services.

?You can come here for wellness and respite, for a natural way to heal, to cleanse, and to get a taste of great healthy living food,? she explained.
