To the heroes of Sandy: Thanks

Far Rockaway: On behalf of residents of the Rockaways and Broad Channel, Community Board 14 would like to thank the thousands of volunteers and donors who have graciously helped our devastated communities recover from Hurricane Sandy. The fact is that many volunteers and groups were up and running days before government was able to bring relief. We will always remember your help and, if necessary, return the favor.

We would also like to thank the hundreds of city employees who worked tirelessly to clean and restore our neighborhoods. We give special thanks to the men and women of the Department of Sanitation, who brought a sense of normalcy back by cleaning our streets of sand and debris.

As we rebuild homes, businesses and lives, we can be grateful that a city long criticized for heartlessness can really be loving and caring. We are truly blessed. Jonathan Gaska, district manager, Community Board 14

Unhappy customer

Broad Channel: After 15 years with my bank, I have an 852 credit score and enough investments to be an elite gold member. Why, then, am I still waiting for the Hurricane Sandy insurance check that I received to be endorsed and returned to me? They have had it for more than three weeks and refuse to grant me access to the money. I have done the necessary paperwork. Why work so hard and do the right thing if it has no positive result? Eric Mundy

Counting the days

Staten Island: After listening to Emperor Bloombucks? ?State of the City? speech, might I suggest that the mayor settle contracts with city workers? Many have been without contracts for five years or more. Or is he too busy restricting what we eat and drink to bother with that? Three hundred eighteen days to go. I can?t wait. Robert K. Greco

Every litter bit hurts

Brooklyn: Re ?Mike?s green scene? (Feb. 14): If Mayor Bloomberg wants the city to go green, he should have thought about that before replacing regular meters with Muni-Meters. In my neighborhood, all I see are those little parking tickets littering the streets. They do not get recycled, and they?re everywhere. It?s disgusting. Candace Barbera

Walk a mile in my shoes

Forest Hills: I share the sentiments of Voicer Clifford F. Zeman. If Christine Quinn considers middle class to be a household of four earning $103,000, she is highly delusional. On my salary, I should qualify for food stamps and free health care. Those making these decisions should live on my salary for 365 days ? while paying rent, food, health insurance, public transportation, electricity, gas, taxes, etc. It?s easy to sit behind a desk and read stats. It?s another to walk the walk. Lisa Santana

Holiday or not for Abe?

Belle Harbor: I agree with Voicer Lynn Matteo about Lincoln?s birthday. Was it a holiday or not? The post office was open. Banks were open. Yet the courthouses were closed. Can someone explain this? Nancy Re

Painful memory

Yonkers: Your paper reported that a big snowstorm took place in January 1969. Wrong! It came in February ?69 and marooned several thousand passengers at area airports for almost three full days. We were on our way to Vegas, Hawaii and Frisco. Instead we had more than two days in an airport lounge. Renee Flanel
