Customers of the Pender County Humane Society?s For Our Furry Friends resale shop in Burgaw will soon be shopping at a bigger store in a new location off U.S. 117.

Norma Troutman, the group?s treasurer, said the shop has outgrown its 600-square-foot building at 1407 N.C. 53 and is looking forward to the additional space.

The group bought land for an animal shelter eight years ago and opened the fundraising resale shop in the small building, she said. ?We opened that, and about four years later we were able to build our Humane Society animal shelter behind that building. People have been so generous to us over the years that now we just can?t cram anything else into that little building. So we have leased a 5,000-square-foot showroom building.?

Troutman said the new location at 102 U.S. 117 S. has an additional 2,500 square feet that can be used for warehouse storage. ?Opening this bigger store is going to give us more items to sell and, hopefully, open up new avenues for us,? Troutman said. ?It?s a big deal for us, and everything is donated from the public or either consigned for the public, and 100 percent of the profit from the store goes to the Pender County Humane Society.?

The group takes in homeless and unwanted animals, providing them shelter and medical care while trying to find new homes for the animals. Troutman said people often get the Pender County Humane Society?s animal shelter confused with the county-run animal shelter. But the Humane Society?s shelter is a no-kill facility.

?We rescue in New Hanover as well as Pender. Animals that we rescue don?t come with county tags ?,? Troutman said.

Funds generated from the store?s sales help keep the shelter going. ?We hope this (store) might help us toward other ventures in the future to help animals, but right now it will be used to pay the mortgage and operating costs on our animal shelter,? she said.

The store?s new name will be FOFF Resale and Consignment Store, using the acronym for ?For Our Furry Friends.? It will open its doors at 10 a.m. June 14.

?If people love animals and want to support us, that would be a good time. We?ll be open that day to accept any donated items from the public,? Troutman said.

PCHS is welcoming more donated items for the store. To donate in Wilmington, contact Gloria at 799-5401 or Llefrog@aol.com; in Burgaw, contact Judy at 470-5122 or wvoriginalgirl@hotmail.com; in Hampstead, contact Bernie at 270-9240.
