Dr. Michael McLeod Appointed to the Florida Commission on Community Service

Avon Park, Florida-- Governor Rick Scott recently announced the appointment of Dr. Michael McLeod, dean of academic support at South Florida State College (SFSC), to the Florida Commission on Community Service.

The Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, Volunteer Florida, was established in 1994 by the Florida Legislature to administer grants under the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. The Commission grants funds to Florida AmeriCorps and National Service programs; coordinates volunteerism in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery; and helps to strengthen and expand volunteer engagement for everyone from youths to seniors, to people with disabilities.

"After moderating a statewide forum in December on community service, I was approached and encouraged to apply to be on the governor's commission," Dr. McLeod said. "Before I was appointed, there was a lack of representation in rural south central Florida. Also, I am the only member from a higher education institution."

Dr. McLeod fills a vacant seat and is appointed for a three-year term that began July 2, 2013. Volunteer Florida's Commission is administratively housed within the Executive Office of the Governor and guided by a bipartisan board of commissioners, who are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Florida Senate.

"I've always been extensively involved in community service since moving to the United States," Dr. McLeod said. "It's a great honor to be selected by the governor to be a member of the Commission on Community Service, especially to keep the heartland of Florida in their sights."

Dr. McLeod, a U.S. Army veteran, has been involved in numerous community outreach activities, including Highlands County Salvation Army, board member and chair; Highlands County Education Foundation, president elect; Sun 'N' Lakes Elementary School Advisory Council, chair; Avon Park High School Advisory Council, chair; Junior Achievement, volunteer teacher and board member; Highlands County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy, graduate; Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce, board member and former chair; Leadership Highlands, chair; Take Stock in Children, mentor; Highlands Art League, board member; Mid Florida Credit Union, advisory board member; Avon Park Knights of Columbus, charter member; Highlands County Interagency, member; Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), executive director; and the Florida Association For Volunteer Resource Management, member.
