This video features Carmen Velasquez, The Executive Director of Alivio Medical Center, and Jorge Linares, a member of the Alivio Healthy Men?s Program.
On October 1st, Jorge was one of twenty Alivio members to run a 5k race at the AIDs Run, Walk, and Roll in support of A Campaign for Better Health Care.
When we spoke with Jorge,? he explained to us that obesity is a common health problem in his community. Jorge participates in the Healthy Men?s program, plays soccer, and runs regularly in order to model good fitness habits for his daughters and for his community. He felt that the AIDs Run, Walk, and Roll was a great opportunity for him have fun exercising with his daughters, while teaching them the importance of physical fitness.
Jorge was also excited to support The Campaign for Better Health Care at this event, because he recognized that health care justice is an important issue for many in his community. In our conversation, Jorge lamented that health care is too expensive, and wished that more people could have access to care.
As the Executive Director and founder of Alivio Medical Center, Carmen Velasquez possesses a deep commitment to serving the poor, the vulnerable, and the undocumented. She supports the? Campaign for Better Health Care?s position that ALL people deserve access in to medical care.
Carmen believes deeply that our country?s health care system should be open to the undocumented. In this clip, she expresses her? concern that The Affordable Care Act and The Illinois Health Care Exchange do not have provisions to include undocumented people. Her message reminds us that although The Affordable Care Act will improve our current health care system significantly, we must continue working to make ?health care for all? a reality.
