I have 2 guinea pigs and I want a bird when they? pass on so I was looking at a bird (specifically a dove) so are they good pets (better then guinea pigs) please state your opinion. and your source!
It truly depends on your situation.
Birds are farely inexpensive to own depending on their breed, type of food, kind of cage, etc.
If you are looking to have friendly birds they will need to be taken out of their cage and played with often or else they get nervous if they are not used to exiting the cage.
I?m not super sure about a dove, but my birds do make quite a mess and the floor around their cage will need to be vacuumed at least once every 1-2 days depending on the season.
Also, they need a cage that is often in open sunlight and away from windows so they stay in fair temperature.
Additionally, depending on the type of bird, they WILL BE NOISY. This is especially if the house is quiet or if the tv is on and no one is talking. My birds speak real words as well as just random squawks.
Another thing to keep in mind is that birds live quite a long time once again depending on the type. My cockatiels are expected to live 20+ years, so it is a big commitment.
As well as that, birds often enjoy having a second bird to spend their time with. It gives them something to do and helps them adapt to a new environment better.
Keeping all this in mind you can decide for yourself if a bird would be a good pet to have in your specific Situation.
I hand fed a morning dove someone brought me knowing is am a bird person.I have raised birds for years and fell in love with that little dove.He had hydrocephalous and I knew he wouldn?t live long.I missed him so much when he died that I bought one from a breeder friend to hand feed.Since this bird is healthy, I?ll give you my experience with him.
I adore him. He sometimes won?t shut up and I often wish he was a hen. He?s entertaining and runs along the floor and flys to us constantly. He slaps my boyfriend, but never slaps me.He bites, but it?s nothing compared to a parrot bite. He laughs and you know he?s up to something. He poops everywhere, but it?s easy to clean up.His instincts to reproduce are so strong he mates with my hand and I had to get him some wooden eggs to set on.He barks for peanuts and expects you to break them up for him.He has a temper from hell sometimes and I wouldn?t take a million dollars for him.I love my African grey and other birds, but have bonded to this little busybody and think you might do the same.
There are times when I swear he?s going to coo himself to death, but other than that, he?s a great pet.I?ve tried to give you the pros and cons, but if you get a hen, your experience would probably be better than mine.
trust me birds are a cool pet, i have 3 african grey parrot, and 2 macaw?s and they are so cute and love to be with me and trustful, i hade a dove once but it died of old age and dove are so close to you they are sweet and wonderfull pets.
