OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Dustin Pedroia's troublesome right thumb is still an issue, and the Red Sox second baseman will undergo further tests during Thursday's off day back in Boston.
Pedroia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics. He tore a muscle in the thumb in late May and missed six games. He says his thumb is sore in a different spot after he landed on it trying to make a diving catch in the outfield during Tuesday night's 3-2 loss.
Manager Bobby Valentine hopes Pedroia will be fine after two full days off to rest ahead of this weekend's four-game series with the Yankees at Fenway Park, which includes a doubleheader Saturday.
Also Wednesday, Boston selected the contract of right-hander Justin Germano from Triple-A Pawtucket.
